QUICK ANSWER
The best staircase position in a house plan is near the entrance but not in the living room, so upper floors can be reached without crossing private space. Allow a footprint of about 8 x 10 feet for a dog legged stair, with 7 to 10 inch risers and 10 to 11 inch treads. Put the stair on the side wall or at the back for a rental floor, and never in the centre on a narrow plot.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Near the entrance, off the lobby, is the default. It keeps bedrooms private and lets a top floor be rented later.
- A dog legged stair needs roughly 8 x 10 feet with 3 feet wide flights. Spiral stairs save space but fail daily use.
- Comfortable Indian stairs: 6.5 to 7 inch riser, 10 to 11 inch tread, 7 feet headroom at every point.
- An external stair on the side setback frees the whole ground floor on narrow plots and suits a tenant upstairs.
- The stair is the best place for a full height window. Plan it with the elevation, not after.
IN THIS GUIDE
Where the staircase should go, in one paragraph
Put the staircase position in a house plan close to the main entrance, opening off a small lobby rather than the living room itself. This lets guests go up without walking through the family space, lets a future tenant use the first floor independently, and gives the stair a front wall for a tall window. On narrow plots place it along a side wall. On wide plots it can sit in the middle as a feature, but only when the house is deep enough to light both sides.
That is the rule we follow in our Indore studio for about seven of every ten houses. The other three have a reason to break it, and we cover those reasons below.
Four placements and when each one works
1. Staircase near entrance, off the lobby
The entrance door opens into a 6 x 8 foot lobby. The stair goes up from one side of it, the living room opens from the other. This is the most flexible staircase position because the upper floor can be a separate home later. The only cost is the lobby itself, about 50 sq ft that is not a room.
2. Side wall stair along the length
On 20 to 25 foot wide plots the stair runs along one side wall, often as a straight or dog legged flight in a strip 3 feet 6 inches wide. It leaves the rest of the width for rooms. This is the common staircase design for a small house and the one we use on most 20x40 and 25x50 layouts.
3. Central stair as a feature
The stair sits in the middle of the plan with the living on one side and dining on the other, usually under a skylight or double height. It looks good in a 40x60 villa. On a narrow plot it cuts the house into two dark halves, so we refuse it below 30 feet width.
4. External staircase for a rental floor
An external staircase for a rental floor runs in the side setback, with its own gate from the road. The ground floor becomes a complete home without losing any area to a stair, and the tenant never enters your house. The downside is exposure to rain, so it needs a roof slab or at least a canopy, and bylaws in some cities count it as a projection.
FROM THE STUDIO
If you plan to rent the top floor, decide between a lobby stair and an external stair now. Changing from one to the other after the plinth is cast means breaking a slab and a wall.
Sizes that feel comfortable
Staircase size in feet is where most self built houses go wrong, because the mason sets out the stair after the walls and squeezes it into whatever is left. We fix the stair in the plan before the rooms around it.
| Element | Comfortable | Minimum (tight plots) |
|---|---|---|
| Flight width | 3 ft 6 in | 3 ft |
| Riser | 6.5 to 7 in | 7.5 in |
| Tread | 10 to 11 in | 9.5 in |
| Mid landing | 3 ft 6 in deep | 3 ft deep |
| Headroom | 7 ft 6 in | 7 ft |
| Total footprint, 10 ft floor height | 8 x 11 ft | 7 x 9.5 ft |
The riser and tread size in India that most people find comfortable follows the old rule: two risers plus one tread equals about 24 to 25 inches. A 7 inch riser with a 10.5 inch tread gives 24.5. Going to an 8 inch riser to save a step feels steep for older parents, and our structural engineer also checks that the waist slab thickness suits the span once the flight length is fixed.
Spiral stairs look clever in a staircase design for a small house but are poor for daily use. Carrying a mattress, a gas cylinder or a child up a spiral is hard. We use them only as a second stair to the terrace.
Light, ventilation and the stair
The stair is the one space that runs the full height of the house, which makes it the best chimney for hot air and the best place for a tall window. A stair on the front wall with a 3 x 8 foot window lights the lobby on both floors and gives the elevation its one strong vertical element.
A stair on an internal wall with no window is a dark tube. If the plan forces this, add a skylight at the top landing or an open riser design that lets light through. Our guide on natural light and ventilation in house design shows how the stair shaft can pull air through the whole house.
The stair window also shapes the front. Read our pillar on modern house elevation design ideas for Indian homes to see how a full height stair glass or louver panel anchors a facade.
Stair, parking and the entrance fight for the same corner
The stair wants the front. The parking wants the front. The entrance wants the front. On a 30 foot wide plot, that is 10 feet for parking, 4 feet for the stair and 3 feet for the door path, which leaves 13 feet for the front room. It works, but only if the three are planned together.
- Stair beside the parking, sharing a wall, with the entrance between the stair and the living room.
- Stair above the parking porch on the first floor landing side, so the porch slab is also the mid landing.
- Stair at the rear with a side passage, when the front must be all living room and parking.
- External stair in the side setback, when the ground floor is a separate home.
Our post on planning car parking in a house plan covers the porch sizes that make the first two options possible. If you are deciding how many floors the stair must serve, our comparison of G+1 and G+2 house design explains when a lift shaft should be planned beside it.
Vastu, bylaws and other constraints
Vastu guidance generally prefers the staircase in the south, west or south west of the house, turning clockwise as you climb, and avoids the north east corner and the centre (brahmasthan). We treat this as guidance the client chooses, not as a structural rule. When a client wants Vastu, we plan the stair in the south west first and see whether light and entrance still work. Our Vastu expert has written a full post on staircase vastu position for those who want the details.
Bylaws are simpler. The National Building Code suggests a minimum stair width of 1 metre for residential buildings and headroom of 2.2 metres. Open to sky stairs in setbacks are allowed in many cities but count as a projection, and some cities insist the stair to a rental floor be internal. Check before drawing.
Mistakes we see on site
- A beam crossing the flight at 6 feet 6 inches, so tall people duck on every climb.
- Risers that change height between the first flight and the second, because the floor level was changed after the stair was cast.
- The stair landing at the exact spot where the upper floor passage needs to be, leaving no room for a door swing.
- No window on the stair, so the lobby on both floors needs lights on all day.
- A spiral stair as the only stair to a floor that will be rented.
- Handrail height under 3 feet with children in the house.
See how we resolve these on real layouts in our duplex house plan collection and in 30x40 house plans, most of which use the lobby stair placement.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place for a staircase in a house plan?
Near the main entrance, opening off a small lobby rather than the living room. This keeps bedrooms private, allows the upper floor to be used independently or rented, and gives the stair a front wall for a tall window. On narrow plots run it along a side wall; avoid the centre unless the plot is 30 feet or wider.
How much space does a staircase take in a house?
A comfortable dog legged staircase for a 10 foot floor height needs about 8 x 11 feet, roughly 85 to 90 sq ft per floor including the landing. A tight version fits in 7 x 9.5 feet. A straight flight along a wall needs a strip about 3 feet 6 inches wide and 14 to 16 feet long.
What riser and tread size is comfortable for Indian homes?
A riser of 6.5 to 7 inches with a tread of 10 to 11 inches is comfortable for all ages. The check is two risers plus one tread equal to about 24 to 25 inches. Risers over 7.5 inches feel steep for elderly users and are hard to climb while carrying loads.
Is a spiral staircase a good idea for a small house?
Only as a second stair, for example to the terrace. As the main stair it is tiring for daily use, unsafe for children and elderly people, and almost impossible for moving furniture, a gas cylinder or a mattress. A narrow straight or dog legged stair of 3 feet width uses little more space and works far better.
Can the staircase be outside the house for a rental floor?
Yes. An external stair in the side setback with its own gate gives the tenant a separate entry and keeps the full ground floor for the owner. It needs a roof or canopy against rain, and some city bylaws count it as a projection or require it to be internal, so confirm before finalising.
