QUICK ANSWER
A 1,000 sq ft RCC house with 9 inch external and 4.5 inch internal brick walls needs about 8,000 to 9,000 bricks, 380 to 420 bags of cement, 3.5 to 4 tonnes of steel, 1,200 to 1,500 cubic feet of sand and 1,300 to 1,600 cubic feet of aggregate. These are thumb rules for 1,000 sq ft of built-up area; add roughly the same again for each extra floor.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Thumb rule for 1,000 sq ft: 8,000 to 9,000 bricks, 400 cement bags, 3.5 to 4 tonnes steel.
- Sand needs 1,200 to 1,500 cubic feet and aggregate 1,300 to 1,600 cubic feet for the same house.
- Wall thickness changes the brick count more than anything else; 4.5 inch walls cut it by a third.
- In 2026 these core materials cost roughly Rs 7 to Rs 9 lakh for a 1,000 sq ft house in a tier 2 city.
- Order in stages against the drawings and keep 5 to 10 percent wastage in the plan.

How many bricks are required for a 1000 sq ft house
A 1,000 sq ft house with a standard RCC frame needs about 8,000 to 9,000 bricks. That assumes 9 inch external walls, 4.5 inch internal walls, 10 ft floor height and standard 9x4x3 inch red clay bricks. Our structural engineer uses 8 to 9 bricks per sq ft of built-up area as the quick check, and this house lands right in that band.
If every wall is 9 inches thick, as in a load-bearing house with no columns, the count rises to 11,000 to 12,500. With AAC blocks of the common 600x200x200 mm size, you need roughly 1,000 to 1,200 blocks for the same walls. More rooms mean more walls; an open plan needs fewer.
These are thumb rules. The exact quantity comes from measuring wall lengths on the drawing, subtracting openings, and dividing by the brick volume with mortar. For a budget, the thumb rule is enough. For ordering, let the engineer run the numbers.
Cement, steel, sand and aggregate for the same house
Bricks are the easy part because you can count them. Cement and steel are where bills go wrong, so here are the full material quantities for a 1,000 sq ft ground floor RCC house on normal soil with spans under 15 ft.
| Material | Quantity | Thumb rule used | Approx 2026 cost, tier 2 city |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bricks (9x4x3 inch red clay) | 8,000 to 9,000 nos | 8 to 9 per sq ft | Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh |
| Cement (50 kg bags) | 380 to 420 bags | 0.4 bags per sq ft | Rs 1.5 to Rs 1.8 lakh |
| Steel (Fe 500 TMT) | 3.5 to 4 tonnes | 3.5 to 4 kg per sq ft | Rs 2.3 to Rs 2.8 lakh |
| Sand (river or M sand) | 1,200 to 1,500 cubic feet | 1.2 to 1.5 cft per sq ft | Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000 |
| Aggregate (20 mm and 10 mm) | 1,300 to 1,600 cubic feet | 1.3 to 1.6 cft per sq ft | Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 |
| Total core materials | Rs 7 to Rs 9 lakh |
Core materials come to about Rs 700 to Rs 900 per sq ft, a third to 40 percent of a standard build. The rest is finishing, labour and services. Our pillar guide on house construction cost per sq ft in India in 2026 shows how these pieces add up to a full rate.
Cement bags for a 1,000 sq ft house split roughly as 70 in foundation and plinth, 150 in columns, beams and slab, 55 in brickwork mortar, 90 in plaster and 35 in flooring beds. Steel is 70 to 75 percent in the slab, beams and columns, with the rest in footings, lintels and the staircase.
Quantity table for 600 to 2,000 sq ft houses
Most readers are not building exactly 1,000 sq ft. The table scales the same thumb rules across common sizes for an RCC framed house with brick walls. Multiply by the number of floors if the area given is per floor.
| Built-up area | Bricks | Cement bags | Steel | Sand (cft) | Aggregate (cft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 600 sq ft | 5,000 to 5,500 | 230 to 260 | 2.1 to 2.4 tonnes | 720 to 900 | 780 to 960 |
| 800 sq ft | 6,500 to 7,200 | 310 to 340 | 2.8 to 3.2 tonnes | 960 to 1,200 | 1,040 to 1,280 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 8,000 to 9,000 | 380 to 420 | 3.5 to 4 tonnes | 1,200 to 1,500 | 1,300 to 1,600 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 9,600 to 10,800 | 460 to 500 | 4.2 to 4.8 tonnes | 1,440 to 1,800 | 1,560 to 1,920 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 12,000 to 13,500 | 570 to 630 | 5.3 to 6 tonnes | 1,800 to 2,250 | 1,950 to 2,400 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 16,000 to 18,000 | 760 to 840 | 7 to 8 tonnes | 2,400 to 3,000 | 2,600 to 3,200 |
Bricks required for a 1,200 sq ft house are around 10,000, and material quantity for a 1,500 sq ft house is about 1.5 times the 1,000 sq ft column. The scaling is close to linear because walls, slabs and footings all grow with floor area. Only the staircase and water tank stay roughly fixed.

What changes the quantities on a real site
The thumb rules hold for a plain G+1 house on good soil. Several design choices push them up or down, and these are the first things we check when a client's contractor bill looks off.
Wall thickness and material
- All 9 inch walls: bricks up 35 to 40 percent, mortar and plaster cement up 10 percent.
- All 4.5 inch walls (only in a strong RCC frame): bricks down about 30 percent.
- AAC blocks: 1,000 to 1,200 blocks replace the bricks, mortar cement drops, plaster stays similar.
Structure and soil
- Black cotton or filled soil: deeper footings, steel rises to 4.5 kg per sq ft or more and foundation cement can double.
- Spans over 15 ft or a large open hall: deeper beams, 10 to 15 percent more steel.
- Future floors planned: columns and footings sized for the full height from day one, steel up 15 to 20 percent.
- Load-bearing ground floor only: steel falls to 2 to 2.5 kg per sq ft, bricks rise because every wall is 9 inch.
Soil is the biggest unknown. A Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 report avoids over-building or under-building the footings. Read why we insist on a soil test before house construction for every plot we design.
FROM THE STUDIO
On our turnkey sites we tag each steel bundle with the element it is for (footing, column, slab) at delivery. It stops bars being cut from the wrong diameter and keeps the count honest.
Converting quantities into a 2026 budget
Material prices move, so the table above uses 2026 tier 2 city ranges: cement at Rs 380 to Rs 430 a bag, Fe 500 TMT at Rs 65 to Rs 72 per kg, red bricks at Rs 8 to Rs 11 each, sand at Rs 50 to Rs 65 per cft and aggregate at Rs 40 to Rs 48 per cft. Metro and remote sites pay more for sand and bricks because transport is a large share of the price.
Take the quantities for your area, add wastage of 5 percent on cement and steel and 8 to 10 percent on bricks and sand, then get delivered rates from two local suppliers including GST and unloading. Keep a 10 percent buffer for price movement over a 10 to 12 month build.
For a 1,000 sq ft house, core materials come to Rs 7 to Rs 9 lakh. Add finishing materials, labour at Rs 400 to Rs 600 per sq ft and services, and you reach the Rs 18 to Rs 26 lakh range covered in our guide to the cost to build a 1000 sq ft house in India.
Ordering and checking materials stage by stage
Never buy the full quantity up front. Cement loses strength after about three months in storage, steel rusts in the monsoon, and bricks get stolen or broken. Order against the stage you are entering, which also matches how contractors raise bills.
- Footings and plinth: 60 to 80 cement bags, 0.8 to 1 tonne steel, 500 to 800 bricks for the plinth wall, a quarter of the sand and aggregate.
- Columns, beams and roof slab: 130 to 160 bags, 2.3 to 2.7 tonnes steel, a third of the sand and aggregate.
- Brickwork and lintels: 50 to 60 bags, 7,000 to 8,000 bricks, a small amount of steel for lintels.
- Plaster, flooring base and finishing: 100 to 130 bags and the remaining sand.
These stages line up with our guide to house construction stages and timeline, so you can map deliveries to the calendar. Photograph each delivery, count bags and bundles, and check steel with a weight test: a 12 mm bar should weigh about 0.89 kg per metre.
If a labour rate contractor is buying on your behalf, ask for supplier bills with the site name, not cash receipts. Most quantity disputes we settle come down to missing bills, not missing bricks.

Frequently asked questions
How many bricks are required for a 1000 sq ft house?
About 8,000 to 9,000 standard 9x4x3 inch bricks for a 1,000 sq ft RCC house with 9 inch external and 4.5 inch internal walls at 10 ft floor height. If all walls are 9 inch thick, as in a load-bearing house, the count rises to 11,000 to 12,500. The thumb rule is 8 to 9 bricks per sq ft of built-up area; add 8 to 10 percent for wastage when ordering.
How many cement bags are needed for a 1000 sq ft house?
Roughly 380 to 420 bags of 50 kg cement for a 1,000 sq ft RCC house, using the thumb rule of 0.4 bags per sq ft. About 150 bags go into columns, beams and slab, 70 into foundation and plinth, 55 into brickwork mortar, 90 into plaster and the rest into flooring beds. Deeper footings or all 9 inch walls push the figure higher.
How much steel is required for a 1000 sq ft house?
About 3.5 to 4 tonnes of Fe 500 TMT steel for a 1,000 sq ft RCC framed house on normal soil, or 3.5 to 4 kg per sq ft. Load-bearing ground floor houses need only 2 to 2.5 kg per sq ft. Poor soil, spans over 15 ft or columns designed for future floors raise it to 4.5 kg per sq ft or more. Slab, beams and columns take 70 to 75 percent.
How much sand and aggregate does a 1000 sq ft house need?
Plan for 1,200 to 1,500 cubic feet of sand and 1,300 to 1,600 cubic feet of coarse aggregate for a 1,000 sq ft RCC house. Sand goes into concrete, mortar and plaster, so it is spread across the build. Aggregate is mostly in footings, columns, beams and slab. Add 8 to 10 percent for sand wastage, and buy by measured truck volume, not by the trip.
What do the core materials for a 1000 sq ft house cost in 2026?
In a tier 2 Indian city in 2026, bricks, cement, steel, sand and aggregate for a 1,000 sq ft house cost about Rs 7 to Rs 9 lakh together, or Rs 700 to Rs 900 per sq ft. Steel is the largest item at Rs 2.3 to Rs 2.8 lakh, followed by cement at Rs 1.5 to Rs 1.8 lakh. Metro cities and remote sites pay more, mainly because of sand and brick transport.
