QUICK ANSWER
A small bathroom design in India works when you split it into a wet zone (shower) and a dry zone (WC and basin), use a wall hung WC and basin to free floor area, and keep tiles light and large. For a 4x6 to 6x8 ft bathroom, a complete renovation with mid range fittings costs Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh in 2026. Get the slope and the drain position right first, everything else is finish.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Most Indian flats have 4x6 to 6x8 ft bathrooms, and all of them can take a wet and dry split.
- Wall hung WC, slim basin and a glass or half wall partition are the three space savers that matter.
- Floor slope of 1:80 to 1:100 toward the drain, with the drain in the wet zone corner, keeps the dry side dry.
- Large light tiles, one accent wall and a mirror the full width of the vanity make a small bathroom feel bigger.
- Budget Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh for a mid range small bathroom renovation in 2026, more in metros.

The three decisions that fix a small bathroom
A small bathroom design in India comes down to three decisions. Where the wet zone sits, whether the WC and basin are wall hung, and how the floor drains. Get those right and even a 4x6 ft bathroom feels fine. Get them wrong and no tile or mirror will save it.
In our Indore studio, bathrooms are the room clients complain about most after moving in. Water on the whole floor, a WC you knock your knee on, a basin so small the tap splashes out. Almost all of it comes from a plan drawn around the plumbing points the builder left, not around how people use the room.
This guide covers layouts for the common Indian bathroom sizes, the fittings that save space, tile and colour choices, ventilation, 2026 costs, and the site checks our construction management expert, Er. Chayan Bansal, insists on before tiling starts. Bathrooms are one piece of the whole house, so if you are planning all the rooms, our guide to home interior design for Indian homes sets the bigger frame.
Common small bathroom sizes and what fits in each
Most builder flats in India have bathrooms between 4x6 ft and 6x8 ft. Independent houses go a little larger. Here is what fits comfortably at each size.
| Size (ft) | Area (sq ft) | What fits | Partition type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x6 | 24 | WC, basin, shower in a line | Shower curtain or half glass |
| 4x7 / 5x6 | 28 to 30 | WC, basin, shower with a 3 ft wet zone | Fixed glass panel |
| 5x7 | 35 | WC, basin with vanity, 3x3 ft shower cubicle | Glass cubicle or half wall |
| 5x8 / 6x7 | 40 to 42 | WC, vanity, shower, slim storage ledge | Glass cubicle |
| 6x8 | 48 | WC, vanity, shower, separate dry area for towel and bucket | Full glass or brick half wall |
The 4x6 bathroom layout
The 4x6 bathroom layout is the tightest one we work with. Put the door on the short wall. Place the basin just inside, the WC next to it along the long wall, and the shower at the far end. A fixed glass panel of 2.5 ft keeps shower water off the WC. A full cubicle does not fit, so we skip it.
The 5x7 bathroom layout
At 5x7 ft you can fit a proper 3x3 ft shower cubicle in the far corner, a wall hung WC in the middle and a 2 ft vanity with a basin near the door. Keep 21 inches of clear space in front of the WC and 24 inches in front of the basin. This is the most common compact bathroom design we draw for 2 and 3 BHK flats.
FROM THE STUDIO
Before moving any fitting, check the existing drain and WC outlet positions. Shifting a WC outlet more than 1 ft means breaking the slab or raising the floor, which adds Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 and a week.
Wet and dry zones: the one rule that matters
A wet and dry bathroom keeps the shower water in one corner so the WC and basin area stays dry. In a small bathroom this matters more than anywhere else, because there is no room for the water to spread and still leave a dry spot to stand.
- Put the shower in the corner farthest from the door, ideally the one with the existing floor drain.
- Give the wet zone a floor level 15 to 25 mm lower than the dry zone, or at least a tile threshold between them.
- Slope the wet zone floor at 1:80 to 1:100 toward the drain. Slope the dry zone gently toward the wet zone, never toward the door.
- Use a fixed glass panel or a 4 ft high brick half wall as the partition. A curtain is the budget option and still works.
- Fit a second drain in the dry zone if the bathroom is used by elders who still bathe with a bucket.
Er. Chayan Bansal checks the floor slope with a water test before tiling on every project we supervise. Water poured near the door should reach the drain in under a minute with nothing pooling. If it pools, the bedding under the tile gets redone then, not after the tiles are laid.
The partition decision also depends on who uses the bathroom. Toughened glass looks bigger and brighter but shows hard water marks within weeks in most Indian cities. A tiled half wall hides the marks and gives a ledge for shampoo, at the cost of a little visual space.
Fittings that save space without feeling cheap
Fittings decide how a small bathroom feels. The wrong WC alone can eat 6 inches of walking space.
- Wall hung WC with a concealed cistern: saves 8 to 10 inches of floor depth compared to a floor mounted one and makes mopping easy. Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000 for the WC and the tank in 2026.
- Slim or semi recessed basin: a 16 to 18 inch wide basin on a 14 inch deep vanity is enough. Corner basins work in a 4x6 ft bathroom.
- Floating vanity: keeps the floor visible under it and gives a shelf for a bucket or a weighing scale.
- Overhead shower with a hand shower on a slider: skip the body jets and the rain panel, they need pressure most flats do not have.
- Wall mounted taps for the basin: frees up the counter and reduces splash.
- Mirror cabinet instead of an open mirror: the depth you already have becomes storage for daily items.
- Sliding or outward opening door: an inward door in a 4x6 ft bathroom blocks the basin every time.
One thing we tell every client: buy the WC and the basin before the plumber marks the points. Each brand has slightly different outlet and inlet positions, and a 2 inch mismatch shows forever.
Tiles, colours and mirrors for small bathrooms
Bathroom tiles for a small bathroom should be light, large and few in variety. Three tiles at most: one floor, one wall, one accent.
Tile size and finish
Use 600x1200 mm or 600x600 mm wall tiles in a light shade. Fewer joints make the wall read as one surface and the room looks bigger. On the floor, use a matt or anti skid finish of 600x600 mm or 300x600 mm. Glossy floor tiles in a wet zone are the number one cause of falls in bathrooms we are called to fix.
Colour
White, off white, light grey, sand and pale sage work in most small bathrooms. Keep the floor one shade darker than the walls so the edges read clearly. One accent wall, usually behind the vanity or inside the shower, can take a darker or patterned tile. Do not put the accent on two walls, it closes the room in.
Mirror and glass
A mirror the full width of the vanity and at least 30 inches tall doubles the visual size of a small bathroom. Pair it with a frameless glass partition and a light tile and the room reads almost twice its real width. Avoid frosted glass partitions in bathrooms under 35 sq ft, they add a visible wall.
If you are picking floor materials for the whole house at the same time, our comparison of tile, marble and wood flooring options in India explains why bathroom floors need a different spec from the rest of the home.
Light, ventilation and storage
Small Indian bathrooms are often internal, with a ventilator shaft instead of a window. Light and air need planning or the room smells damp within a month.
Ventilation
Fit a 6 inch exhaust fan of 150 to 250 cubic metres per hour capacity, as high as possible on the wall opposite the door, so air moves across the room. Wire it to the light switch so it runs whenever someone is inside. If there is a window, keep it, even a 1x1.5 ft louvered one does more than any fan.
Lighting
Two light sources are enough. One warm white ceiling light of 9 to 12 watts and one wall light or mirror light at face height so the mirror does not throw shadows under the eyes. Use IP44 rated fittings inside the wet zone. Our home lighting design guide covers colour temperature choices in detail.
Storage
Build storage into the walls, not into the floor space. A 4 inch deep tiled niche inside the shower, a mirror cabinet, a vanity drawer and a towel rod behind the door cover most needs. Skip the floor standing rack, it is always in the way of the mop.
Small bathroom renovation cost in 2026
Bathroom renovation cost in India for a 5x7 ft bathroom runs from Rs 80,000 at a basic level to Rs 4 lakh or more with premium fittings. These are approximate 2026 ranges for tier 2 cities. Metros add 15 to 25 percent, mostly on labour and waterproofing.
| Item | Basic (Rs) | Mid (Rs) | Premium (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demolition and debris removal | 6,000 to 10,000 | 8,000 to 12,000 | 10,000 to 15,000 |
| Waterproofing and plumbing rework | 15,000 to 25,000 | 25,000 to 40,000 | 40,000 to 60,000 |
| Floor and wall tiles with laying | 20,000 to 35,000 | 40,000 to 70,000 | 90,000 to 1,60,000 |
| WC, basin, taps, shower | 15,000 to 30,000 | 40,000 to 80,000 | 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 |
| Glass partition or half wall | 4,000 to 8,000 | 12,000 to 20,000 | 25,000 to 45,000 |
| Vanity, mirror cabinet, accessories | 8,000 to 15,000 | 20,000 to 40,000 | 50,000 to 90,000 |
| Electrical, exhaust, lights, false ceiling | 6,000 to 10,000 | 12,000 to 25,000 | 30,000 to 50,000 |
| Total | 74,000 to 1,33,000 | 1,57,000 to 2,87,000 | 3,45,000 to 6,20,000 |
Waterproofing is the line people cut first and regret most. A proper two coat cementitious or polymer coating over the floor and 1 ft up the walls, with a ponding test before tiling, costs Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 for a small bathroom. A leak into the flat below costs ten times that. Our post on hidden costs in house construction lists the other places where cutting corners comes back.
Vastu and placement notes
If Vastu matters to your family, it mostly affects where the bathroom sits in the plan, which is fixed in a flat. Within the room, Vastu guidance suggests the WC on the west or north west side, the shower on the north or east, and the door not facing the kitchen or the pooja unit. Treat this as guidance rather than a rule, and read our detailed post on toilet and bathroom position as per Vastu before you fix the layout.
For new houses, bathroom placement is one of the first things our architects settle in the plan, and you can see how it is handled in our 2BHK and 3BHK house plans.
Next step: get a bathroom drawing before you break a tile
Most small bathroom problems are plan problems, and a plan costs far less than redoing tiles. Our interior team prepares a bathroom layout with fitting positions, drain slope, tile layout and an electrical point drawing, either as part of a full home interior package or for a single bathroom renovation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum size for a bathroom in an Indian home?
A 4x6 ft bathroom, which is 24 sq ft, is the practical minimum for a WC, basin and shower in a line. Most municipal bylaws and the National Building Code suggest a minimum of around 1.8 sq m for a combined bathroom, so 4x6 ft meets that. Below this you have to drop the shower or the basin, which we do not recommend.
How do I separate wet and dry areas in a small bathroom?
Put the shower in the corner farthest from the door, drop its floor by 15 to 25 mm or add a tile threshold, slope it at 1:80 to 1:100 to the drain, and fix a 2.5 to 3 ft toughened glass panel or a 4 ft tiled half wall as the partition. A curtain works as a budget option. Keep the drain inside the wet zone, not in the middle of the room.
Which tiles are best for a small bathroom in India?
Light coloured 600x600 mm or 600x1200 mm wall tiles with a matt or anti skid 600x600 mm or 300x600 mm floor tile. Fewer joints make the room look bigger, and matt floors prevent slips in the wet zone. Keep the floor one shade darker than the walls and use a single accent wall at most. Vitrified tiles cost Rs 45 to Rs 120 per sq ft in 2026.
How much does a small bathroom renovation cost in India in 2026?
A full strip and redo of a 5x7 ft bathroom costs about Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh at a basic level, Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 2.9 lakh with mid range fittings and tiles, and Rs 3.5 lakh or more for premium fittings. Metro cities add 15 to 25 percent. Waterproofing and plumbing rework are the items you should never cut.
Is a wall hung WC worth it in a small bathroom?
Yes. A wall hung WC with a concealed cistern saves 8 to 10 inches of floor depth, makes the floor easy to mop and visually opens up the room. It costs Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000 for the WC and tank in 2026, plus a brick or board ledge to hide the cistern. Make sure the ledge is built to the exact frame size before tiling.
