QUICK ANSWER

Home interior design in India in 2026 costs roughly Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per sq ft of carpet area for a full home, so a 3 BHK of 1,200 sq ft lands between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. The process runs in five stages: brief, concept and 3D, material selection, working drawings, and execution. Fix the layout and the budget first, then pick finishes.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Budget Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per sq ft of carpet area for full home interiors in 2026, finishes decide the final number.
  • Kitchen and wardrobes eat 50 to 60 percent of most interior budgets, so decide these two first.
  • Lock the furniture layout before electrical work starts, moving a switch later costs more than the switch.
  • Ask for 3D views and a material list before signing, not after.
  • A good interior plan starts with the floor plan, not with Pinterest pictures.

What home interior design in India costs in 2026

Full home interior design in India costs between Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,500 per sq ft of carpet area in 2026 for a mid range finish. A basic package with laminate finishes sits near the lower end. A premium package with veneer, stone and designer lighting can cross Rs 3,500 per sq ft. These figures cover woodwork, false ceiling, lighting, loose furniture and painting, but not civil changes.

In our Indore studio we tell clients to work backwards from the total they are comfortable with, then divide it room by room. This stops the common problem of a beautiful kitchen followed by bedrooms with nothing in them.

Approximate full home interior cost in India, 2026
Home sizeBasic (laminate)Mid rangePremium
2 BHK, 800 to 950 sq ftRs 8 to 11 lakhRs 12 to 18 lakhRs 22 lakh and above
3 BHK, 1,100 to 1,400 sq ftRs 12 to 16 lakhRs 18 to 30 lakhRs 35 lakh and above
4 BHK or duplex, 1,800 to 2,500 sq ftRs 20 to 28 lakhRs 32 to 55 lakhRs 65 lakh and above

Tier 1 cities like Mumbai and Bangalore run 15 to 25 percent higher than Indore, Bhopal or Jaipur because of labour and transport. If you want a detailed room by room split for a typical flat, read our breakdown of what a 3 BHK interior actually costs in India.

The interior design process, stage by stage

A proper interior design process has five stages. Skipping any one of them is where most budget overruns and site fights begin.

  1. Brief and site measurement. We measure every wall, beam, window and plumbing point. Builder drawings are often off by 2 to 4 inches.
  2. Concept and layout. Furniture positions, wardrobe sizes, kitchen shape and TV wall are fixed on the floor plan.
  3. 3D views and material board. You see each room as it will look, with actual laminate codes, tile names and paint shades.
  4. Working drawings. Electrical layout, false ceiling plan, plumbing changes and cabinet shop drawings. This is what the carpenter follows.
  5. Execution and handover. Civil first, then electrical conduits, false ceiling, woodwork, painting, loose furniture, and finally a snag list.

Stage two is the one clients rush. The layout decides where every switch, light and plug sits. Once the electrician has chased the walls, moving a sofa to the other side means the TV point is now behind a cushion. Our architects spend more time here than anywhere else.

FROM THE STUDIO

Ask your designer for the electrical drawing before the civil team starts. If they cannot show it, the layout is not actually finished.

Where the money goes: a room by room split

Two rooms take half the money in almost every home interior project in India: the kitchen and the bedroom wardrobes. Everything else, including the living room most people obsess over, shares the rest.

Kitchen

A modular kitchen costs Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 per running foot in 2026 depending on carcass material, shutter finish and hardware brand. An 8 by 10 ft L shaped kitchen with a loft usually lands between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. The shape matters as much as the finish, so start with our guide to modular kitchen layouts and standard sizes before you pick a colour.

Bedrooms and wardrobes

Wardrobes run Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft of shutter area. A 7 ft wide, 8 ft tall wardrobe with loft comes to Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh. Sliding shutters cost 20 to 30 percent more than hinged ones. We have collected wardrobe design ideas for Indian bedrooms that cover sliding versus hinged, loft planning and internal fittings.

Ceilings, floors and lighting

A gypsum false ceiling costs Rs 75 to Rs 140 per sq ft in 2026, POP a little less. Done in the living room and master bedroom only, this is Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000 in a typical 3 BHK. Our post on false ceiling design types and their cost explains when a ceiling is worth it and when a simple cove is enough.

Flooring is usually already done by the builder. If you are changing it, vitrified tiles start near Rs 60 per sq ft installed, Italian marble can cross Rs 600. Compare the options in our guide to tiles, marble and wooden flooring options in India. Lighting, including fixtures, profile lights and dimmers, is Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh for a 3 BHK; our home lighting design guide shows how to layer it without overspending.

Materials that actually work in Indian homes

Climate and cleaning habits decide materials more than looks do. Indian kitchens see oil, turmeric and steam. Bathrooms see buckets of water. Floors see wet mopping every day. Pick for that life, not for the showroom.

  • Carcass: BWP (boiling water proof) plywood for kitchens and bathrooms, MR grade or BWR for bedroom wardrobes. Avoid particle board anywhere near water.
  • Shutters: laminate for value and durability, acrylic for a gloss look, PU paint or veneer for premium. Laminate still gives the best cost to life ratio.
  • Counter tops: granite remains the most forgiving. Quartz looks cleaner but marks with heat. Avoid marble in kitchens.
  • Hardware: soft close hinges and channels from a known brand. Cheap hardware is the first thing that fails, usually within two years.
  • Paint: washable emulsion in living and kids rooms, anti fungal in bathrooms and north facing walls.

A mistake we see often is spending on veneer shutters but saving on hinges. Five years later the veneer looks fine and the doors sag. Spend on the parts that move.

Interior design starts with the floor plan

The best interiors we have delivered were planned before the walls went up. When the floor plan already knows where the wardrobe, the fridge and the TV will sit, the electrical and plumbing points land correctly the first time, and nothing has to be broken later.

If you are building rather than buying, bring your interior designer in at the plan stage. Our floor plan design service works alongside our interior team so that a 3 BHK on a 30x40 plot gets a kitchen with a window, a wardrobe wall without a window cutting through it, and a false ceiling that does not collide with a beam. Ar. Sarmishtha, our senior architecture consultant, reviews every interior layout against the structural drawing for exactly this reason.

Turnkey interior design versus hiring a carpenter yourself

You can run interiors three ways: hire a designer for drawings only and manage a contractor yourself, hire a turnkey interior design firm that handles everything, or go straight to a local carpenter with pictures from your phone.

Three ways to get interiors done in India
RouteTypical costWho it suitsMain risk
Design only + own contractorDesign fee Rs 40 to 80 per sq ft, plus execution at costHands on owners with timeCoordination falls on you
Turnkey interior designRs 1,200 to 2,500 per sq ft all inWorking couples, NRI owners, tight timelinesPick the firm carefully, check their shop drawings
Local carpenter, no designerRs 900 to 1,500 per sq ftVery tight budgets, simple needsNo drawings, no 3D, mistakes in layout and electricals

The carpenter route looks cheapest and often costs more, because walls get re-chased and cabinets get rebuilt. If budget is the constraint, reduce scope rather than remove the design. We have put our honest shortcuts in a post on budget interior design tips that do not look cheap.

Frequently asked questions

How much does home interior design cost in India in 2026?

Full home interiors cost roughly Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per sq ft of carpet area in 2026 for a mid range finish, so a 1,200 sq ft 3 BHK falls between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. Basic laminate packages sit lower, premium veneer and stone packages go higher. Tier 1 cities add 15 to 25 percent over tier 2 cities.

Which room should I spend the most on?

The kitchen, followed by wardrobes. Together they take 50 to 60 percent of a typical interior budget because they are the most used, most hardware heavy items. Spend on BWP plywood, soft close hardware and a granite or quartz counter in the kitchen, and on good channels and hinges in wardrobes. Living room decor can be upgraded later; a kitchen cannot.

How long do home interiors take in India?

A 3 BHK takes 45 to 75 working days on site after design sign off, or 35 to 50 days with factory made modular units. Add two to four weeks before that for measurement, layout, 3D views and material selection. Monsoon, festivals and supplier delays commonly add two weeks, so keep a buffer before your move in date.

Is turnkey interior design worth it?

For most working families, yes. Turnkey means one firm handles design, drawings, material procurement and execution, with one point of accountability. It costs a little more than managing a carpenter yourself but avoids layout mistakes, re-chased walls and material substitutions. Check the firm's shop drawings and written material list before signing.

Should interior design be planned before construction starts?

Ideally, yes. When the furniture layout is fixed at the floor plan stage, electrical points, plumbing, beam positions and window placement can be adjusted to suit wardrobes, the kitchen and the false ceiling. This saves breaking and redoing work later. Vastu placements for the kitchen, bedroom and pooja are also far easier to follow on paper than to retrofit.
