QUICK ANSWER

The preferred toilet vastu direction is the north-west of the house, with west and south as accepted alternatives. The WC should sit so the person faces north or south, never east or west. Avoid toilets in the north-east, the south-west corner, the centre of the house, and above or beside a kitchen or pooja room. Keep the septic tank in the north-west and the overhead water tank in the south-west.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • North-west is the first choice for toilets; west and south are accepted; north-east is the main corner to avoid.
  • Face north or south when seated on the WC, which usually means the pan runs along the east-west wall.
  • Never stack a toilet over a kitchen, pooja room or the master bed on a G+1 plan.
  • Septic tank goes to the north-west; overhead tank goes to the south-west, never over a toilet in the north-east.
  • Grouping toilets on one external wall also cuts plumbing cost by 15 to 25 percent, which is the practical reason the rule holds.

The short answer on toilet vastu direction

Put toilets and bathrooms on the north-west side of the house. If that is not possible, use the west or the south. Keep them out of the north-east, the south-west corner and the centre of the house.

Vastu links the north-west with air and movement, so waste and water that need to leave the house are placed there. The north-east is the water and prayer zone and is meant to stay clean and open, so a toilet there is the single most common fault consultants raise. The south-west is for the owners' bedroom and heavy storage, and a toilet in that exact corner is also discouraged.

We present this as traditional guidance, not as science. But our construction management expert will point out the practical side without being asked: toilets on one external wall, away from the kitchen and the prayer room, give you one plumbing shaft, one soil stack and short drain runs. That is cheaper to build and easier to repair. For how the toilets sit alongside the kitchen, bedrooms and pooja room, start with our complete guide to vastu house plans.

Bathroom vastu by direction: a ranking

Bathroom vastu is not one rule but a ranking. Here is the order we use when placing toilets on a plan, and the reason behind each.

Toilet and bathroom position by direction
DirectionVastu viewPractical note
North-westPreferredUsually an external wall; good for the common shaft
WestAcceptedAfternoon sun dries the wet area fast
SouthAcceptedWorks for attached baths of south bedrooms
North (not corner)ToleratedKeep away from the north-east corner itself
South-eastTolerated for bath only, not WCClashes with the kitchen zone; avoid if kitchen is there
EastDiscouragedBlocks morning light to living areas
South-west cornerDiscouragedReserved for master bedroom
North-eastAvoidPrayer and water zone; also the dampest corner
CentreAvoidNo external wall for a window or vent

Toilet in north east vastu is the fault people search for most because it is so common in older row houses. The north-east of a north or east facing plot is often where the entrance and the first small room land, and in the 1980s and 1990s that small room was frequently made the toilet. Fixing it is covered in the last sections of this post.

The south-east needs a word. Vastu allows a bathing area there but not a WC, because the south-east is the fire corner reserved for the kitchen. In our Indore studio we rarely use it at all for a wet room, because the kitchen almost always takes that corner. Our post on kitchen vastu direction and stove placement explains why the kitchen gets priority there.

Toilet seat facing direction vastu

Toilet seat facing direction vastu is the next thing clients ask after the room position. The rule is that the person seated on the WC should face north or south. Facing east or west is discouraged. In practice this means the WC pan sits along the east or west wall of the bathroom, with the user's back to one of those walls.

Most of the time this is easy. In a 5x8 feet bathroom on the north-west corner, the WC naturally goes on the west wall facing east, which is wrong, or on the north or south wall, which is right. Our architects fix the pan position on the plan so the plumber does not decide it on site.

  • Wall-hung WCs give you more freedom because the concealed cistern can go on any wall with a 9 inch ledge wall.
  • Keep the WC away from the bathroom door line, so it is not the first thing you see.
  • The wash basin goes on the north or east wall of the bathroom. The shower goes on the north, east or west side.
  • The geyser, as a fire element, is traditionally placed on the south-east wall of the bathroom. It also keeps the hot pipe run short to the shower.
  • Keep a 2 to 3 feet clear space in front of the WC. Vastu says nothing about this, but the National Building Code and common sense do.

FROM THE STUDIO

A mistake we see often: the WC is placed correctly on the plan, then the plumber shifts it by 2 feet to avoid a beam and it ends up facing west. Ask for the beam layout before the first fix plumbing is marked.

Attached bathroom vastu for each bedroom

Attached bathroom vastu follows the bedroom. The toilet sits on the west or north-west side of the bedroom it serves, not in the north-east corner of that room and not in the south-west corner where the bed goes.

Master bedroom

In a south-west master bedroom the attached bath goes on the west side, sharing the external wall. This gives it a window and the shortest drain run. The door should not face the bed directly. The full set of bedroom rules is in our post on master bedroom vastu and bed position.

Children's and guest bedrooms

A north-west guest room takes its bath on the north-west or west side. A west bedroom takes its bath on the north-west. An east bedroom is the tricky one, because Vastu does not want a toilet on the east wall. We usually place its bath on the north side of the room, as far from the north-east corner as the plan allows.

Common toilet

The common or guest toilet should sit near the entrance but not facing the main door, and not opening into the living room directly. A small lobby or a door at 90 degrees to the living room works. Under the stairs is accepted for a powder room by most consultants if it has an exhaust, and it is where we put it on most 20x40 and 25x50 plans.

Stacking toilets on a G+1 or G+2 plan

On a duplex the question is not only which corner but what sits above and below. This is where most Vastu toilet faults are created, because the two floors are drawn separately.

  1. Stack toilets over toilets. The upper floor bath sits directly over the ground floor bath, sharing the same shaft. This is both the Vastu preference and the cheapest plumbing layout.
  2. Never put a toilet over the kitchen. The soil pipe through the kitchen ceiling is a Vastu fault and a hygiene problem.
  3. Never put a toilet over the pooja room. The north-east upstairs is popular for a bedroom with an attached bath, so check this on every duplex plan.
  4. Never put a toilet over the master bed position or over the main entrance.
  5. Keep the upper floor toilets on the same external wall as the ground floor ones, so one shaft and one external soil stack serve both.

Our construction management expert checks the shaft alignment before the ground floor slab is cast, because once the sleeve for the soil pipe is in the slab, moving it means breaking concrete. On a 30x40 plot, two stacked bathrooms on the north-west wall sharing one 1.5x3 feet shaft is the layout we draw most often.

The pooja room clash is worth repeating because it is so easy to miss. If you are placing both, read our guide on pooja room vastu direction and size alongside this one, so the wet area upstairs does not end up over the prayer room.

Septic tank vastu direction, overhead tank and drains

Septic tank vastu direction is the north-west of the plot, outside the building line, and not touching the compound wall. West is accepted. Avoid the north-east, the south-west and the centre of the plot. The tank should be at least 5 to 6 feet from the house wall and lower than the plinth so the drain falls naturally.

Practically, the north-west is also where the toilets are, so the drain run from the soil stack to the tank is shortest. A septic tank in the north-east would need the soil line to run around the house, which means more joints and more chances of a blockage.

Overhead and underground tanks

  • Overhead water tank: south-west of the terrace, which is also over the heaviest corner of the structure. Never place it over a north-east toilet or over the pooja room.
  • Underground water tank or borewell: north-east of the plot. This is the one water element Vastu wants in the north-east, as fresh water, not waste.
  • Keep the underground fresh water tank and the septic tank as far apart as the plot allows, and never on the same side. Most municipal bylaws also ask for a minimum gap.
  • Rainwater and storm drains should slope towards the north or east of the plot.
  • Drain outlets from the bathroom should exit on the north or east side of the bathroom wall where possible.

In 2026 a standard two-chamber RCC septic tank for a family of 5 to 6 costs roughly Rs 45,000 to 80,000 in a tier 2 city, depending on soil and size. Where a sewer line exists, most municipalities ask you to connect to it instead.

Bathroom door vastu, windows and the floor

Bathroom door vastu asks for a door on the north or east side of the bathroom, opening into the room, and kept closed when not in use. The door should not face the main entrance, the kitchen, the pooja room or the bed directly. A door on the south wall of the bathroom is discouraged.

Every bathroom needs a window to the outside. Vastu wants it on the north or east wall. Building rules want it at a minimum of about 0.3 square metres of opening, and most of our plans use a 2x1.5 feet window plus a small exhaust fan. A bathroom on a shaft with only an exhaust fan is accepted by code in many cities but is the first room to grow mould.

The bathroom floor should be 1 to 2 inches below the adjoining room floor, with a slope of about 1 in 100 towards the drain, so water does not run out of the door. The drain itself should sit on the north or east side of the bathroom. These are the details our site team checks before tiling, because a floor that slopes the wrong way cannot be fixed without lifting the tiles.

For the design side of a small bathroom, including fittings and layouts for 4x6 and 5x8 feet rooms, our post on bathroom design for small Indian homes has dimensioned layouts and 2026 prices.

Fixes for toilets in the wrong place

Many of our clients come to us with a resale house or an old family home where the toilets are already fixed. Here is what we suggest, in order of how much they cost.

  • Toilet in the north-east, house not yet built: move it. This is the cheapest fix and the only complete one.
  • Toilet in the north-east, house built: convert it to a store or a wash area without a WC, and build a new WC on the north-west or west wall. If that is not possible, keep it spotless, keep the door shut, and add a bright window. Consultants also suggest a bowl of sea salt and light colours. We are honest that these are remedies.
  • Toilet over the kitchen: reroute the soil pipe to an external duct and seal the old sleeve. Rs 25,000 to 60,000 depending on access.
  • Toilet in the centre: add a mechanical exhaust with a duct to the terrace. The Vastu issue remains but the damp and smell problem, which is the real complaint, goes away.
  • WC facing east or west: swap to a wall-hung WC on the north or south wall. Rs 15,000 to 35,000 including the concealed cistern and the ledge wall.
  • Septic tank in the north-east: build a new tank in the north-west and fill the old one with sand after pumping it out.

Colour and finish fixes are cheap and come last. Light colours on walls and tiles, white or light grey sanitaryware, no black or dark red, and a window that actually opens. These do not change the direction but they make the room feel right, and that is often what the client was really asking for.

FROM THE STUDIO

Before paying for any remedy in an existing house, get the plumbing checked. Most 'bad energy' complaints about a toilet turn out to be a leaking joint behind the tiles or a blocked vent pipe.

Get the wet areas fixed before the plumbing is marked

Toilets are the hardest rooms to move after construction because of the soil stack, the shaft and the floor sleeve. Toilet vastu direction is cheapest to fix on the drawing, when the north-west wall is still free and the floors can be stacked properly. Our Vastu consultant works with the floor plan architect and our site team so the corner, the WC facing and the shaft agree before the first fix plumbing goes in.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction is best for a toilet according to Vastu?

North-west is the best toilet vastu direction, with west and south as accepted alternatives. Avoid the north-east, the south-west corner and the centre of the house. The north-west is linked to air and movement in Vastu, and in practice it is usually an external wall, which gives a window, a short drain run and one shared plumbing shaft for stacked bathrooms.

Which direction should I face while using the toilet?

Face north or south while seated on the WC. Facing east or west is discouraged in Vastu. This means the WC pan is placed along the north or south wall of the bathroom. A wall-hung WC with a concealed cistern makes this easier, because it can go on any wall with a 9 inch ledge. Fix the pan position on the plan so the plumber does not shift it on site.

Is a toilet in the north-east corner a serious Vastu fault?

Yes, it is the fault most Vastu consultants rank first, because the north-east is the water and prayer zone. If the house is not built, move the toilet to the north-west or west. If it is built, convert the room to a store or wash area without a WC and build a new toilet elsewhere. Where nothing can move, keep it spotless, keep the door closed and add a bright window.

Where should the septic tank be placed as per Vastu?

Place the septic tank in the north-west of the plot, outside the building line, at least 5 to 6 feet from the house wall and not touching the compound wall. West is accepted. Avoid the north-east, south-west and centre. The north-west is also where the toilets usually sit, so the drain run is shortest. Keep the fresh water underground tank in the north-east, on the opposite side.

Can a toilet be built above the kitchen on a duplex?

No. A toilet above the kitchen is a Vastu fault and a hygiene problem, because the soil pipe runs through the kitchen ceiling. Stack toilets over toilets on the same external wall so one shaft serves both floors, and keep them away from the kitchen, the pooja room and the master bed position. If it is already built, reroute the soil pipe to an external duct, which costs about Rs 25,000 to 60,000.
