Climate and orientation

Dry heat for most of the year with a dusty summer and rain mainly in the north-east monsoon. Thick walls, shaded thinnai verandahs and terracotta roofing keep rooms cool. We also check the plot facing early, because Vastu placement and sun path have to be solved together.

Soil and structure

Hard granite close to the surface in most of the city, giving firm bearing for shallow footings, with Vaigai river sand deposits in the central belt. Our structural engineer sizes footings and columns from the soil report, which is why we ask for a soil test before the working drawings are issued.

Approvals in Madurai

Plans are sanctioned by Madurai Corporation and LPA Madurai. Madurai Corporation typically sanctions G+1 or G+2 for independent houses, with heritage controls in the area around the Meenakshi temple. We draw to those setbacks and ground coverage limits from the first sketch, so the sanction drawing and the design are the same drawing.
