QUICK ANSWER

A good bedroom wardrobe in India is 7 to 8 ft wide, 24 inches deep, runs to the ceiling with a loft, and uses hinged shutters in rooms over 11 ft wide or sliding shutters in narrower rooms. Wardrobes cost Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft of shutter area in 2026, so a 7 ft by 8 ft wardrobe with loft lands between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1.4 lakh.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Hinged shutters are cheaper and show everything at once; sliding shutters save 2 ft of floor in narrow rooms.
  • Wardrobes cost Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft of shutter area in 2026, hardware and finish decide the number.
  • Allow 24 inch depth and at least 2.5 ft of clear floor in front of the wardrobe.
  • Plan the internals around what you own: more hanging for working couples, more shelves for sarees and folded clothes.
  • Fix the wardrobe wall at floor plan stage so no window or switchboard cuts through it.

The wardrobe design that works in most Indian bedrooms

The best wardrobe design for most Indian bedrooms is a floor to ceiling unit, 7 to 8 ft wide and 24 inches deep, split into a main body of 7 ft and a loft above. Use hinged shutters where the room is 11 ft or wider, sliding shutters where it is narrower. Put a mix of hanging, shelves and drawers inside, and a mirror on one shutter or the inside of a door.

That one paragraph solves 80 percent of the wardrobes we design in Indore. The rest of this guide is about the other 20 percent: tight rooms, walk in closets, two person storage and how to keep the cost in check.

Sliding wardrobe vs hinged: which one for your room

The sliding wardrobe vs hinged debate is really about the floor in front of the wardrobe. Hinged doors need 2 ft of swing. Sliding doors need none. Everything else follows from that.

Hinged wardrobes

  • Open fully, so you see every shelf at once.
  • Cheaper by 20 to 30 percent, because the hardware is simple hinges.
  • Shutter widths of 18 to 24 inches; wider than that and the hinge sags.
  • Can carry a mirror, hooks and a tie rack on the inside of each door.
  • Need 2 to 2.5 ft of clear floor in front, so the bed must sit at least 3 ft away.

Sliding wardrobes

  • Need no swing space, so the bed can sit 2 ft from the wardrobe.
  • Only half the wardrobe is visible at a time, which annoys some users daily.
  • Cost 20 to 30 percent more, and the quality of the channel decides whether they glide or grind in two years.
  • Shutters can be wide, 3 to 4 ft, with glass, lacquered glass or a full height mirror.
  • Dust collects in the bottom track; a top hung soft close system solves it but adds cost.

Our rule: hinged by default, sliding only when the room forces it. Clients who choose sliding for the look in a 13 ft wide room usually tell us a year later that they miss seeing both halves.

FROM THE STUDIO

If you go sliding, insist on a branded top and bottom channel with soft close, and a shutter thickness of at least 19 mm. Thin sliding shutters bow and start rubbing within a season.

Standard wardrobe sizes and the dimensions that matter

Bedroom wardrobe design is far easier when you start with the standard sizes carpenters and modular factories already use. Odd sizes cost more and leave wasted plywood.

  • Depth: 24 inches (600 mm) outer, which gives about 21 inches inside, enough for a hanger. 22 inches works in tight rooms. Never below 20.
  • Main body height: 7 ft (2,100 mm). Loft above to the ceiling, usually 2 to 2.5 ft.
  • Hanging rod height: 42 to 45 inches for shirts and kurtas, 60 to 66 inches for sarees, long dresses and coats.
  • Shelf spacing: 12 to 14 inches for folded clothes, 16 to 18 inches for bags and bedding.
  • Drawer height: 5 to 6 inches for innerwear and accessories, 8 to 10 inches for folded jeans and sweaters.
  • Plinth or skirting: 3 to 4 inches, keeps shutters off the floor and clear of the mop.
  • Clear floor in front: 2.5 ft minimum for hinged, 2 ft for sliding.

One thing we check on every site visit: whether a window, a beam or a switchboard lands inside the wardrobe wall. A window in the wardrobe wall means a wardrobe with a hole in it, and a switchboard behind the wardrobe means an electrician every time a fuse trips. These are floor plan problems, which is why we settle the wardrobe wall at the plan stage with the architect.

Wardrobe cost per sq ft in 2026

Wardrobes are priced per sq ft of shutter face area, carcass included. In 2026 the wardrobe cost per sq ft ranges from Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,400, with lofts usually quoted 10 to 15 percent lower per sq ft because they have fewer internals.

PremiumBWP ply, PU or veneer, branded fittings, glass shuttersRs 2,000 to 2,400 plusRs 2,400 to 3,000 plusRs 1.15 to 1.6 lakh plus

Three bedrooms with mid range wardrobes come to Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh, which is usually 20 to 25 percent of a 3 BHK interior budget. Our complete guide to home interior design in India shows how that sits against the kitchen and the rest, and our 3 BHK interior cost breakdown goes room by room.

Where to spend: hinges, channels and the carcass. Where to save: external finish. A laminate wardrobe with good hardware outlives a veneer wardrobe with cheap hinges, every time.

Wardrobe internal design: plan around what you own

Most wardrobe internal design goes wrong because it follows a template rather than the owner's clothes. Before we draw the inside, we ask three questions: how many hanging items, how many sarees or folded items, and how many shoes and bags.

  1. Count hanging clothes. Each needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of rod, so 40 shirts and kurtas need 4 to 5 ft of rod.
  2. Decide the saree and folded clothes space. Sarees fold best on 14 inch deep shelves with a 12 inch gap, or hang on a 60 inch rod.
  3. Place drawers at waist to chest height, 30 to 50 inches off the floor. Low drawers mean bending every morning.
  4. Put a locker or a lockable drawer at the back of the top shelf, not at eye level.
  5. Leave one open 18 inch shelf for bags and a pull down rod in the loft if the ceiling is above 10 ft.
  6. Add a mirror on the inside of a hinged shutter, or a full height mirror on a sliding panel, so the bedroom wall stays free.

Working couples usually need 60 percent hanging and 40 percent shelves. Families who wear more Indian wear flip that. We draw both options on paper and let the client pick, because changing a shelf after the carcass is built means cutting plywood on site.

Wardrobe design ideas for specific situations

Loft wardrobe design

A loft wardrobe design takes storage to the ceiling and adds 30 to 40 percent capacity on the same floor area. Keep the loft shutters in the same finish and alignment as the main shutters so the whole wall reads as one unit. Store bedding, suitcases and festival items there, and keep a folding stool in the room.

Walk in wardrobe in India

A walk in wardrobe in India needs a room at least 5.5 ft wide for storage on one side and 7.5 ft for both sides, and a length of 7 to 10 ft. It works best as a passage between the master bedroom and the attached bathroom. Open shelving costs 20 to 30 percent less than shuttered units, but it needs a door on the room and a dust habit.

Wardrobe with dressing unit

Extend the wardrobe run with a 2.5 to 3 ft dressing counter, a mirror, and a drawer stack beneath. Light the mirror from both sides, not from above, or faces get shadows. A profile light inside the wardrobe that switches on with the door is Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 and worth every rupee.

Wardrobe in a narrow or small bedroom

In rooms under 10 ft wide, run a sliding wardrobe along the short wall, keep the finish light, and use a mirror shutter to bounce window light. If even that does not fit, a 22 inch deep hinged wardrobe with the bed pushed to the opposite wall still leaves a 2.5 ft passage.

Wardrobe finishes that age well

Matte laminate in light wood or off white is the finish we see hold up best over ten years. High gloss acrylic shows scratches; dark veneer shows dust. If you want glass, use lacquered or fluted glass only on a few panels. Fluted glass shutters and warm cove light on the wardrobe wall pair well with the ceiling plan, which we discuss in our post on false ceiling design types and cost.

Materials and hardware checklist

  • Carcass: BWR grade plywood (IS 303) for bedrooms, BWP (IS 710) if the wardrobe shares a wall with a bathroom. Avoid particle board.
  • Back panel: 6 mm ply, not 3 mm hardboard, to stop the carcass racking.
  • Shutters: 18 or 19 mm ply with 1 mm laminate both sides, or 18 mm HDHMR for painted finishes.
  • Hinges: soft close, 35 mm cup, from a known brand, three per shutter above 6 ft tall.
  • Channels: full extension soft close telescopic or tandem channels for drawers.
  • Rod: 25 mm oval aluminium or stainless, with mid support beyond 3 ft.
  • Edge banding: 2 mm PVC on all exposed edges, not just the front.
  • Floor: finish the flooring before the wardrobe plinth goes in, and seal the gap. Our guide to flooring options in India covers the thickness of each floor type so the plinth height is right.

A mistake we see often is a wardrobe fixed on a bare slab before the floor goes down. The flooring then stops short of the plinth, water from the mop collects in the gap, and the bottom panel swells.

Vastu and the wardrobe wall

Vastu guidance prefers heavy storage like wardrobes on the south or west walls of a bedroom, leaving the north and east lighter. In our experience this also happens to be where wardrobes work best structurally and for daylight, because windows in Indian bedrooms more often face north or east. If the wardrobe must go on another wall, that is a design trade off and not a rule broken. Our Vastu colleagues cover the room as a whole in the post on master bedroom Vastu placement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a bedroom wardrobe in India?

A standard bedroom wardrobe in India is 24 inches (600 mm) deep, 7 ft tall for the main body, with a loft to the ceiling above, and 6 to 8 ft wide. A couple's master bedroom needs 8 to 10 ft of width; a kids or guest room manages with 5 to 6 ft. Hanging rods sit at 42 to 45 inches for shirts and 60 to 66 inches for sarees and long garments.

Sliding or hinged wardrobe, which is better?

Hinged wardrobes are better in most rooms: they open fully, cost 20 to 30 percent less and carry mirrors and hooks inside the doors. Sliding wardrobes are better only when the room is narrow and there is no 2 ft of swing space in front. If you choose sliding, use a branded top hung soft close channel and 19 mm shutters so they do not bow.

How much does a wardrobe cost per sq ft in 2026?

Wardrobes cost Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft of shutter area in 2026 for hinged units, and 20 to 30 percent more for sliding. A 7 ft wide, 8 ft tall wardrobe with loft comes to Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh depending on plywood grade, finish and hardware brand. Lofts are usually priced 10 to 15 percent lower per sq ft.

How much space is needed for a walk in wardrobe?

A walk in wardrobe needs a room at least 5.5 ft wide for storage on one side, or 7.5 ft for both sides, with a length of 7 to 10 ft. This leaves a 3 ft passage. It works best between the master bedroom and the attached bathroom. Open shelving costs less than shuttered units but needs a door and regular dusting.

Which plywood is best for wardrobes?

BWR grade plywood (IS 303) is the right choice for bedroom wardrobes, with BWP grade (IS 710) if the wardrobe shares a wall with a bathroom or sits on a damp ground floor. Use 18 or 19 mm for shutters and carcass sides, 6 mm for the back panel. Avoid particle board and MDF in humid cities; HDHMR is acceptable for painted shutters.
