QUICK ANSWER
The right modular kitchen layout depends on room shape. An L shaped kitchen suits rooms of 8x8 ft to 10x10 ft and is the most common choice in Indian flats. A parallel kitchen works in rooms 7 to 8 ft wide. U shaped kitchens need at least 9x9 ft, and an island needs a room over 12x12 ft. Budget Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 per running foot in 2026.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- L shaped kitchens fit most Indian flats and give the best storage for the money.
- Keep 3.5 to 4 ft of clear floor between counters, less than that and two people cannot cook together.
- Counter height of 32 to 34 inches suits most Indian users, not the 36 inch western default.
- A modular kitchen costs Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 per running foot in 2026, hardware brand moves this the most.
- Place the sink under the window and the hob on a wall with an exhaust route, before anything else.

Which modular kitchen layout suits which room size
Pick the modular kitchen layout from the room, not from a catalogue. An L shaped kitchen works in almost any room from 8x8 ft upward. A parallel (galley) kitchen is the only sensible choice in a narrow 7 ft wide room. U shaped and island kitchens need more floor than most Indian flats offer, so they belong in independent houses and large 3 and 4 BHKs.
In our Indore studio most of the kitchens we design are between 8x10 ft and 10x12 ft. In that range the L shape wins nine times out of ten, because it leaves one wall free for a tall unit or a dining nook.
| Layout | Minimum room size | Counter length (running ft) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight (single wall) | 6x8 ft | 7 to 10 ft | Studio flats, 1 BHK, open kitchens |
| L shaped | 8x8 ft | 12 to 18 ft | Most 2 and 3 BHK flats |
| Parallel (galley) | 7x10 ft | 14 to 20 ft | Narrow kitchens, two cooks |
| U shaped | 9x9 ft | 18 to 24 ft | Large flats, independent houses |
| Island or peninsula | 12x12 ft | 20 ft plus island | Villas, open plan living dining |
These are the sizes that work on site, not the sizes that look good in a 3D render. A U shaped kitchen in an 8x8 ft room leaves 2.5 ft between counters, and a fridge door will not open fully.
The five layouts, with their trade offs
Straight kitchen
Everything sits along one wall. It is the cheapest modular kitchen to build and the easiest to light. The trade off is counter space; once the hob and sink are in, you have 3 to 4 ft left for prep. Add a tall unit at one end for the fridge and dry stores to make up for it.
L shaped modular kitchen
Two adjacent walls, with the corner usually holding a carousel or magic corner. The L shaped modular kitchen gives the best work triangle in a small room and leaves the third wall open. We usually put the sink on the window wall and the hob on the shorter arm so the chimney duct has a short run to the outside.
Parallel kitchen design
Two counters facing each other. A parallel kitchen design is the most efficient layout for serious cooks because everything is one turn away. It needs 3.5 to 4 ft between the counters. We put wet work (sink, dishwasher) on one side and hot work (hob, oven) on the other.
U shaped kitchen
Three walls of counter. Enormous storage, but two corners to solve, and corners are the most expensive inches in any kitchen. Works well when the kitchen is a closed room with a door on the fourth side.
Island kitchen
A freestanding counter in the middle, usually with seating. Looks great in an open plan living and dining space. Needs 3.5 ft clear on all four sides, plumbing or gas in the floor if the hob sits on it, and a ceiling mounted chimney. Realistic only in houses over 2,000 sq ft.
FROM THE STUDIO
If the room is between 8 and 9 ft wide and you are torn between L shaped and parallel, go L shaped. The free wall is worth more in daily use than the extra counter.
Standard modular kitchen sizes and heights
Modular kitchen size is mostly standardised, which is what keeps the cost down. Knowing the standards helps you catch a carpenter or vendor who is quoting on odd dimensions.
- Base cabinet depth: 22 to 24 inches (560 to 600 mm). Counter top depth 25 inches with overhang.
- Counter height: 32 to 34 inches for most Indian households. 36 inches is the western standard and too high for many users here.
- Gap between counter and wall cabinet: 24 to 28 inches. Lower than 22 and tall vessels do not fit; higher than 30 and the top shelf is out of reach.
- Wall cabinet depth: 12 to 14 inches. Height 24 to 30 inches, with a loft above up to the ceiling.
- Tall unit: 84 to 90 inches high, 24 inches deep, for fridge, oven and dry stores.
- Chimney height above hob: 26 to 30 inches as per most manufacturer manuals.
- Toe kick (skirting): 4 inches, keeps shutters off a wet floor.
One habit we insist on: measure the main cook's elbow height and set the counter 4 to 6 inches below it. It takes two minutes and avoids years of a sore back.
The work triangle and where things go
The kitchen work triangle connects the sink, the hob and the fridge. The sum of the three sides should fall between 12 and 26 ft, and no side should be shorter than 4 ft or longer than 9 ft. Anything inside that works; anything outside feels wrong within a week.
- Place the sink first, under the window if there is one. Natural light on the sink and a view while washing is worth more than any gadget.
- Place the hob on a wall with the shortest duct path to the outside, never directly under a window (the flame flickers, and curtains burn).
- Keep 18 to 24 inches of counter on both sides of the hob, and at least 18 inches on one side of the sink.
- Put the fridge at the end of a run, near the entry, so family members can grab water without walking through the cooking zone.
- Keep the hob and the sink at least 2 ft apart on the same run, with prep space between them.
Vastu guidance, which many of our clients ask for, prefers the kitchen in the south east of the house with the cook facing east while at the hob. Where the room allows, we follow it, and where it clashes with the exhaust route we explain the trade off and let the client decide. Our Vastu expert reviews kitchen layouts before they go to the client, and we have a separate post on the Vastu direction for a kitchen and its hob.
Modular kitchen cost per running foot in 2026
A modular kitchen costs Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 per running foot in 2026, counting base cabinets, wall cabinets and a loft, but not the counter top, appliances or civil work. Quoting per running foot is how most vendors price, so use it to compare.
| Package | Carcass and shutter | Cost per running ft | 8x10 ft L shaped kitchen (approx 16 rft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | MR ply or HDHMR, laminate shutters, standard hinges | Rs 1,400 to 1,800 | Rs 2.2 to 2.9 lakh |
| Mid range | BWP ply, laminate or acrylic shutters, soft close hardware | Rs 1,900 to 2,500 | Rs 3 to 4 lakh |
| Premium | BWP ply, PU or veneer shutters, branded tandem boxes and corner units | Rs 2,600 to 3,200 plus | Rs 4.2 to 5.5 lakh plus |
Add Rs 180 to Rs 450 per sq ft for granite or quartz counter tops, Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 for a chimney and hob, and Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000 for the sink and tap. Tier 1 cities run 15 to 20 percent higher. The kitchen is usually the single biggest line item in interiors, and our guide to home interior design in India shows how it sits against the rest of the budget.
A mistake we see often is a Rs 4 lakh kitchen fitted with Rs 40 hinges to save Rs 6,000. The hinges fail in two years and the whole kitchen feels cheap. Spend on hardware.
Small modular kitchen ideas for Indian flats
A small modular kitchen of 6x8 ft or 7x9 ft is normal in 2 BHK flats in Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore. It can still work hard if you plan vertically.
- Run wall cabinets and the loft to the ceiling. Store yearly items in the loft, weekly items in the wall unit, daily items in the base drawers.
- Use drawers instead of shutters in base units. You see everything from above and nothing hides at the back.
- Pick a slimline 50 cm fridge or move the fridge into the dining area.
- Choose a single bowl sink with a drainboard, not a double bowl, to free counter space.
- Use light shutters and a light counter. Dark kitchens in small rooms look half their size.
Lighting also decides how a small kitchen feels. A single ceiling light casts your own shadow on the counter. Add under cabinet profile lights, which we cover in our home lighting design guide.
Materials: what to use where in a modular kitchen
Indian cooking is wet, oily and hot, so kitchen materials have to survive conditions that catalogue kitchens never face.
- Carcass: BWP (IS 710) plywood for the sink unit and any base unit, BWR acceptable for wall units. Skip particle board entirely.
- Shutters: laminate (1 mm, matte or suede) for the longest life per rupee. Acrylic for gloss, but it scratches. PU paint for premium, with a 5 to 7 year repaint cycle.
- Counter: granite is the most forgiving of hot vessels and turmeric. Quartz looks cleaner but marks with heat. Marble stains with lemon and tamarind.
- Backsplash: large vitrified tiles or a quartz strip. Fewer joints, fewer grease lines.
- Hardware: soft close hinges, tandem boxes and a corner carousel from a known brand. This is where the budget should go first.
The flooring under the cabinets is often forgotten. If you are redoing the floor, use anti skid vitrified tiles in the kitchen and finish them before the cabinets go in; our post on flooring options in India compares the choices.

Frequently asked questions
Which modular kitchen layout is best for a small Indian flat?
An L shaped kitchen is best for most small flats with rooms from 8x8 ft upward. It gives a good work triangle, uses the corner for storage and leaves one wall free. If the room is only 7 ft wide, a parallel kitchen works better. A straight kitchen suits 1 BHK and studio homes where the kitchen opens into the living area.
What is the standard counter height for a modular kitchen in India?
Most Indian households are comfortable with a counter height of 32 to 34 inches, lower than the 36 inch western standard. The right height is 4 to 6 inches below the main cook's elbow. The gap between the counter and the wall cabinets should be 24 to 28 inches so tall vessels fit and the top shelf stays reachable.
How much does a modular kitchen cost per running foot in 2026?
Modular kitchens cost Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 per running foot in 2026 for cabinets and loft. A basic laminate kitchen sits near Rs 1,400 to 1,800, a mid range BWP ply kitchen with soft close hardware near Rs 1,900 to 2,500, and premium PU or veneer kitchens above Rs 2,600. Counter top, chimney, hob and sink are extra.
How much space is needed between two kitchen counters?
Keep 3.5 to 4 ft (42 to 48 inches) of clear floor between facing counters in a parallel or U shaped kitchen. This lets one person cook while another opens a drawer or the oven. Below 3 ft the kitchen becomes a single person space and appliance doors clash. Around an island, allow 3.5 ft on every side.
Should the hob or the sink go under the kitchen window?
The sink should go under the window. Natural light helps while washing, and a window above a hob causes the flame to flicker in draughts and puts curtains near fire. Place the hob on a wall with the shortest route for the chimney duct to the outside, with 18 to 24 inches of counter on each side.
