QUICK ANSWER
The preferred kitchen vastu direction is the south-east corner of the house, called the Agni corner. North-west is the accepted second choice. Place the stove so the cook faces east, keep the sink on the north or north-east side away from the stove, and avoid a kitchen in the north-east, the exact centre, or directly under a toilet.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- South-east is the first choice for a kitchen; north-west is the practical second option.
- Cook facing east, with the stove on the east or south-east wall of the kitchen.
- Keep the sink and water points on the north side, 2 to 3 feet from the stove.
- Avoid kitchens in the north-east corner, the centre of the house, or below a toilet.
- A south-east kitchen gets morning sun and dries fast, which is the practical reason the rule survives.

The short answer on kitchen vastu direction
Put the kitchen in the south-east corner of the house if you can. If the plan does not allow it, use the north-west corner. These two corners cover almost every kitchen we draw in our Indore studio, and both are accepted in traditional Vastu texts.
Vastu links the south-east with Agni, the fire element, so the room where fire is used every day sits there. The north-west is linked with air, and a kitchen there is accepted because smoke and heat move out quickly.
We treat Vastu as traditional guidance, not as science. What is interesting is how often the old rule matches a plain architectural reason. A south-east kitchen gets early morning sun, warms up first, and dries fastest after cleaning. For how room placement fits together across the whole house, start with our complete guide to planning a vastu house plan.
Why south-east is the first choice
South east kitchen vastu has a reason behind it that has nothing to do with belief. The sun rises in the east and swings south through the day. A room on the south-east corner gets direct light from about 7 am to noon, which is when most Indian households cook the heaviest meal.
Early sun kills moisture on counters, keeps the room warm on winter mornings, and means you cook with daylight instead of a tube light. Our interior design expert also points out that an east window gives good task light on the counter without glare on a glossy shutter.
Traditional Vastu divides the house into nine zones and gives the south-east to Agni. The hearth belongs there, and the cook faces east. Modern consultants extend the same logic to the gas stove, the induction hob and the microwave.
FROM THE STUDIO
If your south-east corner is already taken by a bedroom in an old plan, moving the kitchen there is often cheaper than you expect, because a kitchen needs only one external wall for the window and exhaust.
When north-west is the better option
Kitchen in north west vastu is the fallback most consultants accept without fuss. We use it in roughly one out of four plans, mostly on north-facing and west-facing plots where the south-east corner ends up at the back near the toilet block, or where parking has to sit on the south-east side.
A north-west kitchen gets afternoon light and good cross ventilation, because the summer breeze in central and north India comes from the west or south-west. The trade off is that it is often farther from the dining area. Keep that walk under about 15 feet. Our notes on a north facing house vastu plan show a few layouts where the north-west kitchen works cleanly.
Directions to avoid for the kitchen
Some placements are treated as faults in almost every Vastu school. We design them out at the plan stage because fixing them later means moving plumbing and gas lines.
- North-east corner. This is the water and prayer zone. It is the most common fault we see in old city houses, and it is also the corner that gets the least afternoon sun, so the room stays damp.
- Exact centre of the house. A central kitchen has no external wall for a window or exhaust duct, so smoke and smell spread through the home.
- South-west corner. Vastu reserves this for the master bedroom.
- Directly below a toilet. Stacking a toilet over a kitchen puts the soil pipe through the kitchen ceiling. That is a plumbing problem before it is a Vastu one.
- Sharing a wall with the pooja room, or directly under it on a G+1 plan.
The toilet stacking point comes up on every duplex plan. If you are working out where the bathrooms go, read our guide on where toilets and bathrooms should sit in a vastu plan alongside this one, because the two rooms compete for the same corners.
Stove, sink and fridge inside the kitchen
Getting the room into the right corner is half the work. The next half is where things go inside it. Stove direction vastu is the question clients ask us most, so we take it first.
Stove and cooking position
The stove goes on the east or south-east wall of the kitchen, so the person cooking faces east. If the kitchen is in the north-west, the stove still goes on the east side of that room where possible. Keep the stove 2 to 3 feet from the sink. Vastu reads this as keeping fire and water apart. Our interior design expert reads it as keeping splashes off a hot pan and the gas valve dry.
Sink and water points
Kitchen sink vastu puts the sink, the RO unit and the water purifier on the north or north-east side of the kitchen. In a south-east kitchen that usually means the sink lands on the north wall under a window, which is where most plumbers would put it anyway because the drain run to the outside is shortest.
| Element | Preferred position | Practical reason |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen room | South-east corner | Morning sun, dries fast, easy exhaust |
| Second choice | North-west corner | Good cross breeze, evening light |
| Stove | East or south-east wall, cook faces east | Task light on counter, no glare |
| Sink and RO | North or north-east side | Shortest drain run to outside |
| Fridge | South-west or west side | Away from burner heat |
| Exhaust or chimney duct | East or north wall | Shortest straight run outside |
| Avoid | North-east, centre, under a toilet | Damp, no ventilation, soil pipe overhead |
Facing direction while cooking, and the door
Kitchen facing direction while cooking means the way the cook stands at the hob. East is preferred. North is accepted. West is tolerated when nothing else works. South is the one we are asked to avoid, and it is also the position where afternoon sun on the burner wall makes the kitchen hottest.
The kitchen door should open from the east, north or west side of the room, and the cook should not have their back directly to the door. An L-shaped kitchen with the hob on the east leg and the entry on the north wall solves this in most 8 by 10 feet rooms. If you are picking a counter shape, our post on modular kitchen layouts and standard sizes covers L, U and parallel kitchens with dimensions.
Vastu colour advice for a kitchen leans on warm light tones, yellow, orange, cream and off-white, and discourages dark blue and black on the main walls. A light colour also keeps a south-east kitchen cooler once the sun moves to the south in the afternoon.
What to do when the plot fights the rule
Not every plot gives you a free south-east corner. Narrow 20x40 and 15x40 plots tend to run the kitchen along a side wall, and apartments give you no choice at all. Here is how we handle the common conflicts.
- If the only free corner is north-east, place the hob slightly south of the corner and push the sink and water points into the true north-east. Many consultants accept this split.
- If the kitchen must sit on the north wall, put the hob at the east end of the counter so the cook still faces east.
- If the kitchen falls in the centre, add a full height window or ventilator onto a light shaft or courtyard. Ventilation is the real problem with a central kitchen.
- If a toilet lands above the kitchen on a G+1 plan, shift the toilet by one grid or route the soil pipe through an external duct. Our structural engineer checks the duct position before the slab is cast.
- Use remedies (colour, a copper strip under the hob, a small Agni yantra) only after the layout is fixed.
Vastu kitchen placement on a tight plot comes down to one question: which corner can take a window and a drain? Answer that first. Our guide to natural light and ventilation in a house design walks through how we test that on a plan.
FROM THE STUDIO
A mistake we see often: clients fix the kitchen in the south-east and then put the external staircase right outside its window. The room goes dark and the whole benefit is lost. Check the window before you check the compass.
Get your kitchen position checked before the plan is final
The kitchen is the hardest room to move after construction because of the gas line, the drain and the exhaust duct. It is far cheaper to get the kitchen vastu direction right on paper. Our Vastu consultant works with the floor plan architect so the corner, the stove wall and the plumbing all agree before the drawing goes to the contractor.

Frequently asked questions
Which direction is best for a kitchen according to Vastu?
South-east is the best kitchen vastu direction, followed by north-west as the second choice. The south-east is the fire corner in Vastu, and it also gets direct morning sun, which keeps the kitchen dry and bright during the main cooking hours. North-west works on plots where the south-east corner is taken by parking or the entrance.
Can a kitchen be in the north-east corner?
Vastu advises against a kitchen in the north-east, which is reserved for water and prayer. If you have no other option, keep the hob slightly south of the corner, place the water points in the true north-east, and give the room a large window. Practically, a north-east kitchen gets little afternoon sun and tends to stay damp.
Which direction should I face while cooking?
Face east while cooking. Place the stove on the east or south-east wall of the kitchen so the cook naturally faces east. North is the accepted second option and west is tolerated. Facing south is discouraged. Facing east also means morning light falls on the counter rather than into your eyes.
Where should the sink be placed in a Vastu kitchen?
The sink, RO unit and other water points should sit on the north or north-east side of the kitchen, 2 to 3 feet away from the stove. In a south-east kitchen this usually puts the sink on the north wall under a window, which is also the position with the shortest drain run to the outside.
Is a kitchen under a toilet a Vastu problem?
Yes, and it is a plumbing problem too. Stacking a toilet above a kitchen runs the soil pipe through the kitchen ceiling, which Vastu treats as a serious fault and hygiene treats the same way. On a G+1 plan, shift the upper toilet by one grid or move the soil pipe to an external duct before the slab is cast.
