QUICK ANSWER

Master bedroom vastu places the main bedroom in the south-west corner of the house, on the top floor if the home has more than one. The bed should sit against the south or west wall so you sleep with your head to the south or east. Keep the wardrobe on the south or west side, the attached bathroom on the west or north-west, and avoid a mirror facing the bed.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • South-west is the preferred master bedroom vastu direction; on a duplex, put it on the upper floor.
  • Sleep with your head to the south (first choice) or east, never to the north.
  • Heavy wardrobes go on the south or west wall; keep the north-east part of the room light and open.
  • Attached bathroom sits on the west or north-west side of the bedroom, not the north-east.
  • The south-west corner also gets afternoon sun and stays warm in winter, which is the practical reason behind the rule.

Where the master bedroom should be

The master bedroom goes in the south-west corner of the house. If the house has two floors, it goes in the south-west corner of the upper floor. That is the whole of the rule, and almost every Vastu text and consultant agrees on it.

Vastu assigns the south-west to the earth element and to stability. The owners of the house, the people who hold it together, are meant to sleep there. We present this as traditional guidance, not as proven fact, but we also notice that the south-west corner is the one that makes the most sense for a bedroom on plain building logic.

The south-west gets the afternoon and evening sun. In most Indian cities that means the room is the last to cool in the evening and the warmest in winter. It is also the corner farthest from the entrance in a north or east facing house, so it is the quietest. Those two things, warmth and privacy, are what people want from a bedroom anyway. For how the bedroom fits with the kitchen, pooja room and other rooms, our complete vastu house plan guide lays the whole grid out.

Bedroom vastu direction by room, not just the master

Clients often ask us about the master bedroom and forget that the other bedrooms have their own guidance. Here is the quick map we use when placing all the sleeping rooms on a plan.

Bedroom vastu direction for each bedroom type
BedroomPreferred cornerSecond optionAvoid
Master bedroomSouth-westSouth or westNorth-east, south-east
Children's bedroomWest or north-westEastSouth-west (reserved for owners)
Guest bedroomNorth-westNorthSouth-west
Elderly parentsSouth-west (if owners move) or southEastNorth-east
Newly married coupleNorth-westWestSouth-east (fire zone)

South west bedroom vastu is specific to the people who run the household. If elderly parents are the heads of the family, many consultants suggest giving them the south-west room and moving the younger couple to the south or west. We have done this on several Indore plans and it rarely costs anything extra, because the two rooms are usually the same size.

Guest rooms in the north-west have a practical logic too. The north-west is linked to movement and travel in Vastu, and guests come and go. It is also usually the corner nearest the entrance on an east or north facing plot, so guests do not walk through the family area.

Bed position as per vastu

Bed position as per vastu is the second question after the room itself. The bed should sit against the south or west wall of the master bedroom, with a solid wall behind the headboard. Do not place the bed under a beam, directly in line with the door, or floating in the centre of the room.

Sleeping direction vastu

Head to the south is the first choice. Head to the east is the second choice and is often recommended for children and students. Head to the west is accepted. Head to the north is the one position almost every consultant asks you to avoid.

The usual explanation given is about the body's magnetic alignment with the earth. We do not make claims about that. What we can say is that a bed against the south wall in a south-west room puts the window on the north or east side, so morning light comes in across the room and not straight onto the pillow. Most people sleep better that way.

Rules for the bed itself

  • Use a bed with a solid headboard and a wooden frame. Metal frames are discouraged in most Vastu texts.
  • Keep the bed at least 3 inches off the wall on the two open sides so air moves around it, and so the room is easy to clean.
  • No storage under the bed is the strict rule; if you need under-bed storage, keep it for linen only and not for old papers or shoes.
  • Avoid a beam running directly over the bed. If you cannot move the bed, drop a false ceiling to hide the beam.
  • The bed should not face the door directly, and the feet should not point at the door when lying down.

FROM THE STUDIO

In our studio we draw the bed on the plan before fixing the switch board and AC point. A bed moved later for Vastu reasons often ends up with the AC blowing straight onto the headboard. Fix the bed first, then the services.

Wardrobe, mirror and dressing area

Heavy things go to the south and west. That is the simplest way to remember wardrobe placement. A full height wardrobe on the south or west wall of the master bedroom follows the Vastu advice that weight belongs in the south-west quadrant of any room.

Our interior design expert points out that this also puts the wardrobe on the wall that gets afternoon sun from outside, which means the wardrobe doors act as a thermal buffer and the room stays a little cooler. On a 12 by 14 feet master bedroom that wall is usually the 14 feet one, which gives a comfortable 7 to 8 feet wardrobe run.

Mirror in bedroom vastu

Mirror in bedroom vastu is strict on one point: the mirror should not reflect the bed. If the dressing mirror faces the bed, cover it at night or fit it inside the wardrobe shutter so it is hidden when closed. Place the dressing table on the north or east wall so the mirror faces south or west, away from the sleeping area.

Many of our clients prefer a mirror inside the wardrobe door for exactly this reason. It keeps the Vastu rule and saves floor space. For wardrobe layouts that include this, our post on wardrobe design ideas for Indian bedrooms has a few options with dimensions.

Master bedroom attached bathroom vastu

Master bedroom attached bathroom vastu puts the toilet on the west or north-west side of the bedroom. Avoid attaching it on the north-east corner of the room or on the south-west corner, which is where the bed is meant to go.

The architectural side of this is about the plumbing stack. In a south-west master bedroom, a bathroom on the west side shares an external wall, which gives a short drain run and a window for ventilation. A bathroom squeezed into the inside corner of the room has neither, and that is where damp walls start.

  1. Keep the bathroom door closed and, if possible, not directly facing the bed.
  2. Put the WC on the north-south axis so the person faces north or south, never east or west, as the common Vastu advice runs.
  3. Give the bathroom a window to the outside. A ventilator onto a duct is a poor substitute.
  4. Raise the bathroom floor by 1 to 2 inches so water does not run into the bedroom.
  5. Check the floor above. A toilet should not sit over the master bed on a G+1 plan.

Toilets fight with bedrooms and kitchens for the same corners on a tight plot. If you want the full set of rules for wet areas, our guide on toilet and bathroom position in a vastu plan covers every corner, including the ones that cause trouble on duplex plans.

Doors, windows and what to keep out

The master bedroom door should ideally open from the north, east or west side of the room. A door on the south wall is discouraged. The door should open fully to 90 degrees without hitting a wardrobe, which sounds obvious but is a mistake we fix on plans every month.

Windows on the north and east walls are preferred. They bring in morning light and the steady north light that does not heat the room. A south-west bedroom with a window on the east wall and a wardrobe on the west is the layout we draw most often, and it needs no remedy.

Things Vastu asks you to keep out of the master bedroom

  • A temple or pooja shelf. Keep prayer in the pooja room, not in the sleeping room.
  • Water features, aquariums and large indoor plants. The bedroom is meant to be an earth zone, not a water zone.
  • Electronics directly facing the bed. A TV on the wall opposite the bed is widely accepted now, but place it so the screen does not reflect the bed when off.
  • Family photographs of deceased relatives on the bedroom walls.
  • Clutter under the bed and in the north-east part of the room.

Fixes when the south-west corner is not available

Not every plan gives you a clean south-west corner. On a south-facing plot the south-west often ends up near the entrance. On a 20x40 or 25x50 plot the back of the house might be north. Here is how we handle it.

First, take the south wall or the west wall even if you cannot have the exact corner. A bedroom on the south side with the bed on the south wall still satisfies most consultants. Second, on a duplex, move the master bedroom upstairs. The upper floor south-west is preferred over the ground floor anyway, and it is usually free of parking and entrance constraints.

Third, if the master bedroom has to sit in the north-west or north, keep the bed on the south wall of that room and put the heavy wardrobe on the west. Most of the Vastu benefit comes from the bed and weight position, not from the exact room corner. A plot's facing changes which corners are easy to use, and our note on a south facing house vastu plan shows how the master bedroom lands when the entrance is on the south.

Remedies like colour, a small earth-element symbol in the south-west, or a heavy piece of furniture are what consultants suggest when nothing can move. We treat them as the last step, after the plan is correct.

FROM THE STUDIO

A mistake we see often on duplex plans: the master bedroom is placed correctly in the south-west upstairs, but the water tank is placed right above it on the terrace. Vastu prefers the overhead tank in the south-west too, so this is actually fine. What is not fine is a tank leak over a bedroom, so we always ask for a waterproofing layer under the tank slab.

Colours and finishes for the master bedroom

Vastu colour guidance for a south-west bedroom favours earthy tones, light brown, beige, peach, cream and soft pink. Dark red, black and deep blue are discouraged for the main walls. Most of our 2026 interior projects use a warm off-white on three walls and one textured earthy accent wall behind the bed, which fits the advice and looks current.

Wooden flooring or wooden-look tiles suit the earth zone idea and are warmer underfoot in winter, which matters in north and central India. Marble is fine but feels cold in a south-west room that is meant to feel settled. For a wider look at finishes, our home interior design guide for Indian homes covers bedroom materials and current prices.

Get the bedroom corner right before the walls go up

Moving a bedroom after construction means moving a bathroom, and that is expensive. Master bedroom vastu is cheapest to fix on the drawing. Our Vastu consultant and floor plan architect work on the same plan so the corner, the bed wall, the wardrobe and the bathroom all line up before anything is built.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction is best for the master bedroom as per Vastu?

South-west is the best master bedroom vastu direction. On a house with two floors, place it in the south-west corner of the upper floor. South or west are the accepted second choices. Avoid the north-east and south-east corners for the master bedroom. The south-west gets evening sun and sits farthest from the entrance, which also makes it the warmest and quietest room.

Which direction should I keep my head while sleeping?

Keep your head to the south while sleeping, which is the first choice in Vastu. East is the second choice and is often suggested for children. West is accepted. Avoid sleeping with your head to the north. In a south-west bedroom this means placing the bed against the south wall, which also keeps the morning window light off the pillow.

Can a mirror be placed in the master bedroom?

Yes, as long as the mirror does not reflect the bed. Place the dressing table on the north or east wall so the mirror faces away from the sleeping area, or fit the mirror inside a wardrobe shutter so it is hidden when closed. If an existing mirror faces the bed, cover it at night. This is the most common bedroom fix we are asked for.

Where should the attached bathroom be in a master bedroom?

The attached bathroom should sit on the west or north-west side of the master bedroom, with a window to the outside. Avoid attaching it on the north-east or the south-west corner of the room. Keep the door closed and not directly facing the bed. On a west wall the drain run is short and the room ventilates properly, which is why plumbers prefer that position too.

What if my plot does not allow a south-west master bedroom?

Take the south wall or the west wall even if the exact corner is not free, and on a duplex move the master bedroom to the upper floor. Place the bed on the south wall and the heavy wardrobe on the west in whichever room you use. Most consultants agree that bed and weight position carry more of the benefit than the exact room corner. Remedies like colour come last.
