QUICK ANSWER
A vastu house plan places each room by direction according to Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian guidance on building layout. The usual pattern is a kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west, pooja room in the north-east, toilets in the north-west or west, and the main entrance on the north or east side. Staircase and open space follow from these anchors.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Fix five anchors first: entrance, kitchen, master bedroom, pooja space and toilets. The rest follows.
- North-east is kept light and open; south-west heavy and closed. Most Vastu rules trace back to this.
- Square or rectangular plots are the easiest to plan as per Vastu.
- Full compliance is rarely possible on a narrow plot. Prioritise the big items, not every small rule.
- Treat Vastu as traditional guidance. Light, ventilation and structure still come first in our studio.

What a vastu house plan actually means
A vastu house plan is a normal floor plan where the rooms are placed by compass direction, following Vastu Shastra. Vastu is old Indian guidance on how buildings should sit on land and where heavy and light functions should go. It is tradition, not tested science, and we present it that way to every client.
In practice, a vastu plan for home design comes down to five decisions: main door, kitchen, master bedroom, pooja space and toilets. Once those five are fixed, the dining, living, stairs and parking fall into place around them.
In our Indore studio, most families ask for basic Vastu compliance, not every rule. They want the entrance, kitchen and master bedroom right, and nothing their elders will object to on the first visit.
FROM THE STUDIO
Before we draw a single wall, we check the actual compass bearing on site. Many 'east facing' plots are 20 to 30 degrees off, and that changes which rules apply.
The direction logic behind every rule
Almost every Vastu rule comes from one idea: keep the north-east light, open and low, and keep the south-west heavy, closed and high. North and east get the entrance, open spaces and water. South and west take the weight: thick walls, stores, the master bedroom, overhead tanks.
Each of the eight directions has a traditional role. This is the version we use when explaining a vastu shastra for home plan to clients.
| Direction | Element | Suggested use | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| North-east | Water | Pooja, entrance, open space, underground tank | Toilet, kitchen |
| East | Air, light | Entrance, living room, verandah | Toilets, store |
| South-east | Fire | Kitchen, electrical panel | Pooja room |
| South | Earth | Bedrooms, store, staircase | Entrance without care |
| South-west | Earth (heaviest) | Master bedroom, overhead tank | Entrance, kitchen |
| West | Space | Dining, children's room, toilets | Main water source |
| North-west | Air | Guest room, toilets, garage | Pooja room |
| North | Wealth | Living room, entrance | Heavy construction |
The centre of the house, the Brahmasthan, is kept free of columns, toilets and staircases in a traditional vastu house layout. In a modern G+1 house that often becomes a double height living area.
Plot shape and orientation come before rooms
The plot is the first thing we assess. A square or rectangular plot with a length to width ratio under 1:2 is the easiest to plan as per Vastu. Odd shapes and cut corners are considered difficult; the usual fix is to wall off a regular rectangle inside and leave the rest as garden or parking.
Which facing suits which family
Facing is decided by the road side, so you rarely get to choose it. Each facing has known strengths and problems, and each has its own guide on this blog.
- East facing: the easiest to plan. See our east facing house vastu plan with entrance pada positions.
- North facing: very good for the entrance, needs care with the kitchen. Read our north facing plot layout as per Vastu.
- West facing: workable with a few fixes. Our west facing house vastu guide covers entrance and kitchen options.
- South facing: wrongly feared. We explain the south facing house vastu rules and door position in detail.
You can browse ready layouts for each facing in our Vastu house plan collection and filter by plot size.
Main entrance: the one decision clients worry about most
The main door gets more Vastu attention than any other element. Traditional texts divide each side of the plot into nine equal parts, called padas, and only some padas are considered good for the door.
- Divide the facing side of the plot into nine equal parts as you look at the house from the road.
- North facing: third, fourth or fifth pada from the north-east corner.
- East facing: third to fifth pada from the north-east corner.
- West facing: third to sixth pada from the north-west corner.
- South facing: third or fourth pada from the south-east corner.
- The door opens inward and clockwise, with no pillar or tree directly in front of it.
In a vastu compliant house plan the entrance door is also the largest door in the house, with no toilet directly above it. Our senior architect checks this in section, because the first floor often gets planned later and breaks the rule.
Kitchen, bedrooms and pooja room placement
These three rooms carry most of the weight in a house plan as per Vastu.
Kitchen
The kitchen goes in the south-east as the first choice and the north-west as the second. The cook faces east at the hob, and the sink is kept away from the hob. We cover platform direction and what to do when the south-east is already taken in our post on the right kitchen direction according to Vastu.
Master bedroom
The master bedroom sits in the south-west, on the upper floor in a G+1 house. The head of the bed points south or east. Children's and guest rooms go to the west or north-west. For bed position and attached toilet rules, read our guide on master bedroom vastu and bed direction.
Pooja room
The pooja room belongs in the north-east. On small plots it becomes a wall unit in the north-east corner of the living room, which is acceptable. It should never be under a staircase, against a toilet wall, or in a bedroom. Our post on pooja room size and direction as per Vastu gives typical dimensions for 2 BHK and 3 BHK homes.
Toilets, staircase and water: the usual conflicts
These three elements fight for space with the rules above. On a 20x40 or 25x50 plot something has to give, and we would rather compromise here than on the entrance or kitchen.
Toilets are placed in the north-west or west, with the south also acceptable, never in the north-east or the centre. Our guide on where toilets and bathrooms should sit in a Vastu plan also covers the attached toilet in a south-west bedroom, which comes up in almost every brief.
Staircases go in the south, west or south-west, turning clockwise as you climb, never in the north-east or at the centre. Water follows the same logic: underground tank in the north-east, overhead tank in the south-west, septic tank in the north-west.
What to do when the plot does not allow full compliance
This is where experience matters more than the rule book. A narrow 15x40 plot with the road on the south cannot fit every ideal position at once. Our order of priority is this.
- Main entrance in a good pada and no toilet above it.
- Kitchen in south-east or north-west, cook facing east.
- Master bedroom in south-west, or at least on the south or west side.
- No toilet in the north-east quadrant.
- Pooja in the north-east, even if it is only a wall unit.
- Everything else, including bed direction, mirrors and colour.
A common mistake we see in plans sent for review is a kitchen pushed into the north-east to keep the living room on the road side. That trade is never worth it. Swap living and dining instead.
FROM THE STUDIO
If you are still buying a plot and want a vastu plan for home from day one, pick one with the road on the north or east and a near rectangular shape. It saves money and arguments later.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best direction for a house as per Vastu?
North and east facing houses are traditionally considered the easiest for a vastu house plan, because the entrance, living room and open spaces fall naturally on the preferred sides. West and south facing houses can still be fully Vastu compliant with correct door placement and room arrangement. Facing is decided by the road, so the plan matters more.
Which rooms should be in which direction according to Vastu?
The usual pattern is kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west, pooja room in the north-east, toilets in the north-west or west, living room in the north or east, and staircase in the south or west. Children's and guest rooms go to the west and north-west. The centre is kept open where possible.
Can a small plot have a fully Vastu compliant house plan?
Rarely in every detail, but the important items can almost always be met. On narrow plots like 15x40 or 20x40 we prioritise the entrance position, kitchen direction, master bedroom side and keeping toilets out of the north-east. Smaller rules like bed direction are adjusted inside the room later.
Is Vastu scientifically proven?
No. Vastu Shastra is traditional Indian guidance on building layout, and we present it as that, not as science. Some of its advice overlaps with good design, such as east facing windows for morning light and heavy walls on the hot south-west side. We follow it for families who value it, without compromising structure, ventilation or daylight.
How much does a Vastu consultation for a house plan cost in 2026?
A plan review by a Vastu expert typically costs Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 in 2026, depending on plot size and whether a site visit is needed. When Vastu input is part of the floor plan design itself, as in our studio, it is usually included in the design fee. Fixing a built house costs far more than planning it right.
