QUICK ANSWER
A north facing house vastu plan places the main door in the north-east half of the north wall, ideally in the third, fourth or fifth pada counted from the north-east corner. Living room goes to the north or north-east, kitchen to the south-east, master bedroom to the south-west, pooja to the north-east and toilets to the north-west or west. North facing is traditionally one of the two most favoured orientations.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Door in the north-east half of the north wall. The north-west corner is acceptable, the exact centre less so.
- Living room at the front, bedrooms at the back: north facing plans feel natural to most families.
- The kitchen is the tricky item. South-east is at the rear right, far from the entrance, which lengthens plumbing.
- Keep the north side open: wider front setback, lower wall, no heavy porch roof over the door.
- North light is soft all day. Use it for the living room, study and stair, and save the hot south for stores.
IN THIS GUIDE
Where the main door goes in a north facing house
The main door of a north facing house goes on the north wall, in the half closer to the north-east corner. Divide the north wall into nine equal parts starting from the north-east corner. The third, fourth and fifth parts are considered the best door positions in a north facing house vastu plan. The first and second are acceptable. The parts nearest the north-west corner are workable, and the south of the plot is not involved at all.
Vastu is traditional guidance, not science, and we present it to every client that way. The reason this door position is popular in design terms is simple: it leaves the north-west free for parking or a toilet and keeps the entrance clear of the south-east kitchen.
North facing is, with east facing, the orientation families ask for most. The living room and entrance both fall on the preferred side, and the pooja room sits beside the entry. For the full direction map that drives these choices, read our room by room guide to a vastu house plan.
FROM THE STUDIO
We measure the actual bearing on site before fixing the door. North facing plots in diagonally planned colonies are often 20 degrees off, which can shift the pada count by one part.
Room placement for a north facing plot
A north facing plot vastu layout has the public rooms at the front and the private rooms at the back, which is how most families want to live anyway. The heavy south-west corner is the rear right, so the master bedroom goes there.
| Room | Preferred position | Where that falls | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main door | North-east half of north wall | Front, right of centre | South-west, exact centre |
| Living room | North or north-east | Front | South-west |
| Kitchen | South-east | Rear right | North-east, south-west |
| Master bedroom | South-west | Rear left | North-east |
| Children's bedroom | West or north-west | Front left or along west | South-west |
| Pooja room | North-east | Front right corner | South, under stairs |
| Toilets | North-west or west | Front left | North-east, centre |
| Staircase | South, west or south-west | Rear or along west | North-east, centre |
| Parking | North-west | Front left | North-east if covered and heavy |
The living room runs along the north, with the entrance opening into it. Dining sits behind the living room at the centre or east. The pooja takes the front right corner, right next to the entrance, which is a comfortable place for it in daily use.
The master bedroom goes to the rear left, the south-west. On a G+1 house the same corner upstairs becomes the master suite and the ground floor room goes to parents. Bed, wardrobe and attached toilet rules inside the room are in our guide to master bedroom vastu and bed direction.
The kitchen question in a north facing house
The one awkward item in north facing house vastu is the kitchen. The south-east is the rear right corner, as far from the entrance as a room can be. On deep, narrow plots that means a long corridor or a dining room doing double duty as a passage.
We solve it in one of three ways, in order of preference.
- Keep the kitchen in the south-east and place the dining between living and kitchen as the connecting room. This is the normal solution on 30x40 and larger plots.
- On 20x40 or 20x50 plots, use an open kitchen along the east wall running back from the dining, so the hob still lands in the south-east.
- If the south-east is taken by a stair that cannot move, use the north-west as the accepted second position, with the cook still facing east.
What we do not do is put the kitchen at the front in the north-east, even though it would be closer to the entry. The north-east stays for pooja and open space. Hob direction, sink position and the north-west fallback are covered in our post on kitchen direction as per Vastu.
A practical bonus: the south-east kitchen at the rear right is also where the plumbing stack for the south side toilets usually runs, so the drainage stays short even if the walk is long.
Keeping the north side open
Vastu asks for the north and east to be lighter and more open than the south and west. On a north facing plot that is easy to honour because the front setback does the work.
- Give the front (north) more setback than the rear (south). Most bylaws already require this on the road side.
- Keep the compound wall on the north lower than on the south, or use grills above a low plinth.
- Avoid a heavy RCC porch roof directly over the entrance. A light canopy or pergola is preferred.
- Put the overhead tank and any heavy mass on the south-west, not above the front door.
- An underground water tank, if planned, goes in the north-east corner of the setback.
North light is also the best working light. It is soft and even all day, with no glare. Our senior architect places the study, the stair window and the living room's main glazing on the north for this reason, which lines up with what the tradition asks for.
Sample north facing house plans by plot size
20x40 north facing plot
Door at the north-east half of the front, living room across the full 20 ft width, dining behind it, kitchen along the east ending in the south-east, one bedroom in the south-west, toilet at the north-west behind the parking slot, stair along the west. Upstairs: master bedroom south-west, second bedroom north-west, small pooja niche north-east.
30x40 north facing plot
The natural size for a north facing 3 bhk vastu plan on G+1. Ground floor: entrance and pooja at the north-east, living along the north, dining centre, kitchen south-east with a utility behind it, parents' bedroom south-west, common toilet and parking at the north-west, stair along the west wall. First floor: master bedroom south-west, two bedrooms along the north with the family lounge between.
40x60 north facing plot
Enough width for a car porch at the north-west, a small lawn at the north-east beside the entrance, a proper pooja room, a south-east kitchen with store, and the master suite at the south-west. The stair goes to the south or west so the centre of the house stays open. You can see worked examples in our north facing house plans collection.
Toilets, stairs and the north-east corner
In a north facing house the north-east corner sits at the front, right beside the entrance, where visitors first arrive. It is also where clients most often want a guest toilet or a shoe store. Both are avoided in Vastu. The corner goes to the pooja, a window seat or simply open floor.
Toilets go to the north-west or west. In a north facing plan that is the front left, behind the parking, which is convenient as a guest toilet. The attached toilet of the south-west master bedroom sits on its west or south side. See our post on toilet and bathroom position in a Vastu plan for the attached toilet question.
The pooja room itself, whether a full room or a wall unit, follows the size and door rules in our guide to pooja room direction and size as per Vastu. Stairs go to the south or west, climbing clockwise, and stay out of the north-east and the centre.
Mistakes we fix in north facing plans
- Guest toilet in the north-east corner beside the entrance. Move it to the north-west.
- Kitchen at the front in the north-east to shorten the walk from the door. The south-east is where it belongs.
- Door in the exact centre of the north wall, cutting the living room in half. Shift it to the north-east half.
- First floor toilet over the ground floor pooja. Check every plan in section.
- A heavy RCC porch over the whole north frontage, making the open side the heaviest part of the house.
Facing does not change the construction cost. In 2026 a G+1 north facing house of about 1,800 sq ft costs roughly Rs 1,700 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft in tier 2 cities and Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,200 in tier 1 cities, depending on finishes and city.

Frequently asked questions
Where should the main door be in a north facing house as per Vastu?
In the north-east half of the north wall. Divide the north wall into nine equal parts from the north-east corner; the third, fourth and fifth parts are considered the best door positions, with the first and second also acceptable. Avoid the exact centre and the south-west. The door should open inward and clockwise with nothing directly blocking it.
Is a north facing house good according to Vastu?
Yes. North facing is traditionally considered one of the two most favourable orientations, along with east facing. The entrance, living room and pooja room all fall on the preferred north and north-east side. North light is also soft and even all day, which makes the living room and study comfortable without glare.
Where should the kitchen be in a north facing house?
In the south-east corner, which is the rear right of a north facing house. The cook faces east at the hob. Because this corner is far from the entrance, the dining room usually sits between living and kitchen as the connecting space. If the south-east is unavailable, the north-west is the accepted second choice. Never place the kitchen in the north-east.
Can I have a toilet near the entrance of a north facing house?
Yes, if it sits in the north-west, which is the front left of a north facing house, typically behind the parking slot. Do not place it in the north-east, the front right corner beside the door, which Vastu reserves for the pooja and open space. Also avoid a toilet at the exact centre of the plan or above the pooja room on the upper floor.
What plot size suits a north facing 3 BHK vastu plan?
A 30x40 plot on G+1 is the most comfortable size for a north facing 3 BHK with every Vastu anchor in place and a south-east kitchen that connects through the dining. A 25x50 or 20x50 also works with a longer plan. On 20x40 a 3 BHK needs compact rooms and the master bedroom upstairs. From 40x60 upward you get a porch, lawn and separate pooja room.
