QUICK ANSWER
In an east facing house vastu plan the main door sits in the north-east half of the east wall, ideally in the third, fourth or fifth pada counted from the north-east corner. The living room goes to the east or north-east, kitchen to the south-east, master bedroom to the south-west, pooja room to the north-east and toilets to the north-west or west. East facing plots are the easiest to plan as per Vastu.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Main door in the north-east portion of the east wall, never in the south-east corner.
- Kitchen south-east, master bedroom south-west, pooja north-east: the same anchors as any Vastu plan.
- Keep the east side low and open: verandah, lawn or wide windows, no tall compound wall.
- On narrow east facing plots, the stair and toilets go to the back (west) to keep the front clear.
- East facing gives morning sun; add deep shading on the west wall or the bedrooms will overheat.
IN THIS GUIDE
Where the main door goes in an east facing house
The door goes on the east wall, in its northern half. Divide the east wall into nine equal parts starting from the north-east corner. The third, fourth and fifth parts are considered the best positions for the main entrance in an east facing house vastu plan. The first and second parts are also acceptable. The southern half of the wall, the sixth to ninth parts, is avoided.
This is traditional Vastu guidance, not science, and we present it as such. In practice it also works well for design, because a door in the north-east half leaves the south-east free for the kitchen and keeps the morning sun on the living area.
An east facing house is the one most families hope for when they buy a plot. The entrance, living room and pooja all fall naturally where Vastu wants them. If you want the full logic behind these placements, our room by room vastu house plan guide explains the direction map that every facing follows.
FROM THE STUDIO
On site we check the actual bearing with a compass app and a physical compass. An 'east facing' plot in a diagonally laid colony may face north-east or south-east, and the pada count changes.
Room placement for an east facing plot
Once the door is fixed, the rest of the east facing plot vastu follows the standard direction map. The front (east) is kept light and open, the back (west) takes the heavier rooms.
| Room | Preferred position | Acceptable | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main door | North-east half of east wall | Centre of east wall | South-east corner |
| Living room | East or north-east | North | South-west |
| Kitchen | South-east | North-west | North-east, south-west |
| Master bedroom | South-west | South or west | North-east |
| Children's bedroom | West or north-west | South | South-west |
| Pooja room | North-east | East | South, under stairs |
| Toilets | North-west or west | South | North-east, centre |
| Staircase | South, west or south-west | North-west | North-east, centre |
| Parking | North-west or north-east | South-east | South-west |
The kitchen deserves a note. In an east facing house the south-east corner is at the front right as you enter, so clients often want to put a bedroom there for the road view. We hold the kitchen in the south-east and give the bedroom a west facing window instead. The details of hob direction and sink position are in our post on which kitchen direction Vastu recommends and why.
The master bedroom goes to the south-west, the rear corner on the right. On a G+1 house we repeat the same corner upstairs. Our guide to master bedroom vastu, including bed and wardrobe position covers the inside of the room.
Keeping the east side open and low
Vastu asks for the north and east sides of a plot to be more open than the south and west. For an east facing house this means a few practical choices.
- Leave more setback in front (east) than at the back (west). A 5 ft front and 3 ft rear setback is common on small plots.
- Keep the compound wall on the east lower than the one on the south and west, or use a railing.
- Place the verandah, sit-out or lawn on the east. Morning sun there is pleasant for most of the year.
- Put the overhead tank, store and any heavy mass on the south-west, not above the entrance.
- Underground water tank, if any, goes in the north-east corner of the open space.
These rules also happen to produce a house that looks lighter from the road. Our senior architect usually turns the open east side into a double height verandah or a planter wall in the elevation, so the Vastu requirement becomes a design feature rather than a limitation.
Sample east facing house plans by plot size
The same rules bend differently on different plot widths. Here is how we typically arrange an east facing house vastu plan on the common sizes we see in Indore, Bhopal and Jaipur.
20x40 east facing plot
Only 20 ft of frontage, so the door takes the north-east half and the kitchen the south-east corner, side by side. Living room runs along the east behind the door. One bedroom at the south-west, staircase at the west end, toilet at the north-west. This gives a 1 BHK or tight 2 BHK ground floor with the master bedroom upstairs.
30x40 east facing plot
The most comfortable size for an east facing 3 bhk vastu plan on G+1. Ground floor: entrance north-east, living east, dining centre, kitchen south-east, guest or parents' bedroom south-west, common toilet north-west, stairs west. First floor: master bedroom south-west, two bedrooms north-west and north-east, family lounge over the living room.
40x60 east facing plot
Enough room for a car porch in the north-east, a small lawn along the east, and a pooja room as a proper room rather than a wall unit. Kitchen with utility in the south-east, master suite in the south-west, and the staircase pushed to the west so the centre of the house stays open. Pooja room and north-east corner
The north-east is the most protected corner in Vastu, and in an east facing house it sits right beside the entrance. That makes it ideal for the pooja room, but it also makes it tempting to use for a shoe rack, a toilet or the staircase. We do not allow any of those three.
On small plots the pooja becomes a niche in the north-east corner of the living room, roughly 3 ft wide and 2 ft deep. On larger plots it becomes a 5x5 or 6x6 room. Sizes and door direction are covered in our post on pooja room direction and size as per Vastu.
One more north-east point: keep this corner at the lowest floor level in the house if there is any level difference, and never cut or round it in the plot shape.
Common mistakes we fix in east facing plans
Most east facing plans that reach us for review have the door right. The errors are in the second layer.
- A toilet in the north-east corner of the first floor, directly above the pooja room. Always check the plan in section.
- The staircase placed at the front to save corridor space, blocking the east light and sitting in the north-east.
- Kitchen moved to the north-east because the family wanted a south-east bedroom with a road view.
- A tall, solid compound wall on the east that leaves the house dark by 10 am.
- No shading on the west wall. East facing houses get harsh afternoon sun at the back, and the south-west bedroom heats up.
The last point is where Vastu and comfort meet. The south-west master bedroom is correct in Vastu, but in central India it needs a thick wall, a small west window and ideally a balcony or chajja for shade.
If your plot is north facing instead, the logic shifts. Our post on the north facing house vastu plan and its door positions covers that case.
Does east facing cost more to build
No. Facing does not change the structure or the material quantity. In 2026 a G+1 east facing house of about 1,800 sq ft costs roughly Rs 1,700 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft to build in tier 2 cities, and Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,200 in tier 1 cities, depending on finishes. Vastu placement adds nothing to this if planned from the start.
The only real extra is shading on the west. A deeper chajja or a louvre screen on the west wall adds Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 on a typical house, and it pays back in comfort every summer.

Frequently asked questions
Where should the main door be in an east facing house as per Vastu?
In the north-east half of the east wall. Divide the east wall into nine equal parts from the north-east corner; the third, fourth and fifth parts are considered the best door positions, with the first and second also acceptable. Avoid the southern half of the wall, especially the south-east corner. The door should open inward and clockwise.
Is an east facing house good according to Vastu?
Yes. East facing is traditionally considered one of the two most favourable orientations, along with north facing, because the entrance, living room and pooja room all fall naturally on the preferred north-east side. It also gives morning sun in the living area. The main design task is shading the west wall, which takes the afternoon heat.
Where should the kitchen be in an east facing house?
In the south-east corner, which in an east facing house is the front right corner as you enter. The cook should face east while at the hob. If the south-east is not possible, the north-west is the accepted second choice. The kitchen should never be in the north-east, which is reserved for the pooja room and open space.
Can the master bedroom be at the front of an east facing house?
Vastu guidance places the master bedroom in the south-west, which is the rear right corner of an east facing house. A front bedroom on the east is acceptable for children or guests, but not for the head of the family. On a G+1 house, we keep the south-west master bedroom on the first floor in the same corner.
What size plot is ideal for an east facing 3 BHK vastu plan?
A 30x40 plot on G+1 is the most comfortable fit for an east facing 3 BHK with all Vastu anchors in place. A 25x50 also works with a slightly longer plan. On 20x40 you can manage a 3 BHK only on G+1 with compact rooms. From 40x60 upward you get a car porch, lawn and a separate pooja room without compromise.
