QUICK ANSWER
West facing house vastu places the main door in the north-west half of the west wall, in the third to sixth pada counted from the north-west corner. The kitchen goes to the south-east, master bedroom to the south-west, pooja room to the north-east and toilets to the north-west or south. A west facing house is fully workable in Vastu; the real challenge is afternoon sun on the front wall.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Door in the north-west half of the west wall, never in the south-west corner.
- The front of a west facing house is the heavy side in Vastu, so the master bedroom sits at the front right.
- Kitchen stays in the south-east, which is the rear right corner here. Do not move it to the front.
- Afternoon sun hits the facade. Plan a deep porch, chajja or screen from day one.
- West facing plots often cost 5 to 10 percent less than east facing ones in the same colony. That is a real saving.
IN THIS GUIDE
Where the entrance goes in a west facing house
The main door of a west facing house goes on the west wall, in its northern half. Count nine equal parts along the west wall starting at the north-west corner. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth parts are considered good for the entrance in west facing house vastu. The first two parts are acceptable. The south-west corner, parts seven to nine, is avoided.
This is traditional guidance from Vastu Shastra, not a scientific rule, and we present it to clients as tradition. It does have a design benefit: a door in the north-west half keeps the south-west corner solid for the master bedroom and puts the entry closer to the north, where the living room wants to be.
West facing plots get a bad name they do not deserve. In our Indore studio we have planned many of them as per Vastu without compromise. The direction map is the same as for any facing; only the entry wall changes. Our complete vastu house plan guide, room by room lays out that map.
FROM THE STUDIO
Check the real bearing before counting padas. In many colonies a 'west facing' plot actually faces south-west or north-west by 15 to 25 degrees, and the preferred door position shifts.
Room placement on a west facing plot
The west is the heavier, more closed side in Vastu. That means the front of your house, the side facing the road, carries the master bedroom and the stair rather than the living room. This feels odd to clients at first, so we explain it with a table.
| Room | Preferred position | Where that falls | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main door | North-west half of west wall | Front, left of centre | South-west corner |
| Living room | North or north-east | Front left to rear left | South-west |
| Kitchen | South-east | Rear right | North-east, south-west |
| Master bedroom | South-west | Front right | North-east |
| Children's bedroom | North-west or west | Front left (upper floor) | South-west |
| Pooja room | North-east | Rear left corner | South, under stairs |
| Toilets | North-west, west or south | Front left, or along south | North-east, centre |
| Staircase | South or south-west | Front right or along south | North-east, centre |
| Parking | North-west | Front left | North-east if it blocks light |
The living room often ends up along the north wall, running from front to back, with the entrance opening into it from the west. Dining goes to the centre or the east. The pooja sits in the rear left corner, the north-east, which in a west facing house is the quietest part of the plot.
The kitchen stays in the south-east, the rear right. Clients sometimes want it at the front for a window to the road. We do not move it. For the hob and sink rules inside the kitchen, see our post on the correct kitchen direction as per Vastu.
The sun problem, and how we solve it
Vastu aside, the biggest issue with a west facing house is heat. From about 2 pm to sunset the whole front wall is in direct sun. In Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat that wall can be too hot to touch in May. The front rooms heat up and stay warm into the night.
We handle it with a few standard moves.
- A deep porch or verandah along the west, at least 6 ft deep, so the wall behind it is shaded.
- Chajjas of 2 ft or more over every west facing window, or vertical fins that cut the low evening sun.
- Fewer and smaller windows on the west; bring light in from the north and east instead.
- A 9 inch wall on the west with a cavity or AAC blocks, rather than a 4.5 inch wall.
- Trees or a pergola with creepers on the west setback where the plot allows.
These moves also suit Vastu, which wants the west to be the solid, heavy side. A thick, well shaded west wall with the master bedroom behind it is exactly what the tradition asks for and exactly what the climate needs.
Sample west facing house plans by plot size
20x40 west facing plot
With 20 ft of frontage, the door takes the north-west half and the stair the south-west half of the front. Living runs along the north, kitchen at the south-east rear, one bedroom at the south, toilet at the north-west behind the door. Master bedroom upstairs at the south-west, directly over the stair landing area.
30x40 west facing plot
A good size for a west facing 3 bhk plan on G+1. Ground floor: entrance north-west, living along the north, dining at the centre, kitchen south-east, parents' bedroom south-west at the front right, stair along the south, common toilet north-west. Upstairs: master bedroom south-west, children's room north-west, third bedroom north-east with pooja below it kept clear of any toilet.
40x60 west facing plot
Room for a covered car porch at the north-west, which doubles as shade for the front door. A verandah runs along the west, master suite at the south-west, kitchen with utility at the south-east, and a proper pooja room in the north-east. See worked examples in our west facing house plans collection.
On any of these sizes, if you are comparing with a plot across the road, our guide to the east facing house vastu plan shows how the same rooms flip when the entry moves.
Toilets and staircase in a west facing plan
These two elements cause most of the conflicts on a west facing plot, because the front half of the house is where Vastu wants both of them and also where the door is.
Toilets go to the north-west, west or south. The common ground floor toilet usually sits behind the entrance in the north-west, which works well because it also keeps plumbing short. The attached toilet of the south-west master bedroom goes on its west or south side, never in the room's north-east corner. Our post on toilet and bathroom position according to Vastu covers the attached toilet question in detail.
The staircase goes to the south or south-west, climbing clockwise. In a west facing house that is the front right, which places the stair mass where Vastu wants weight. We make sure it does not sit in the exact centre of the plan or in the north-east. For the structural side, including how the stair affects column positions, see where to place a staircase so it satisfies Vastu and the structure.
Mistakes we see in west facing plans
- Door in the south-west corner because the client wanted the living room at the north end. Shift the door, not the corner.
- Living room at the front right, in the south-west, with the master bedroom pushed to the rear. This reverses the heavy and light sides.
- Kitchen at the front for a road window. The south-east is at the back here, and it stays there.
- Large west facing picture windows with no shading. Lovely in the brochure, unbearable in May.
- Toilet above the pooja room on the first floor. Check the plan in section, not just the ground floor.
Our urban planner also checks the municipal setback and parking rules for the plot, because west facing plots on wider roads sometimes have a larger mandatory front setback. That extra setback is useful: it gives room for the shading porch.
Should you buy a west facing plot
Yes, if the price is right and the plot is rectangular. West facing plots in the same colony are often 5 to 10 percent cheaper than east or north facing ones because of buyer preference. On a Rs 40 lakh plot that is Rs 2 to 4 lakh saved, which more than covers the extra shading and wall insulation.
The construction cost itself does not change with facing. In 2026, a G+1 house of about 1,800 sq ft runs roughly Rs 1,700 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft in tier 2 cities and Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,200 in tier 1 cities, depending on finishes and city.

Frequently asked questions
Is a west facing house good or bad as per Vastu?
A west facing house is considered fully acceptable in Vastu when the door and rooms are placed correctly. It is not inferior to east or north facing; it simply needs the entrance in the north-west half of the west wall and the master bedroom in the south-west. The practical issue is afternoon sun on the front, which good shading solves.
Where should the main door be in a west facing house?
In the north-west half of the west wall. Divide the west wall into nine equal parts from the north-west corner; the third to sixth parts are considered the best positions, with the first two also acceptable. Avoid the south-west corner entirely. The door should open inward and clockwise, with nothing blocking it directly in front.
Which room should be at the front of a west facing house?
In Vastu the west is the heavy side, so the front right corner (south-west) takes the master bedroom and the staircase, while the entrance and a toilet sit at the front left (north-west). The living room runs along the north side from front to back. This feels unusual at first, but it also puts the thick, shaded wall where the afternoon sun hits.
Where does the kitchen go in a west facing house?
In the south-east corner, which is the rear right of a west facing house. The cook faces east at the hob. If the south-east is not available, the north-west is the second choice, though on a west facing plot that corner is usually taken by the entrance and toilet. The kitchen never goes to the north-east or south-west.
How do I reduce heat in a west facing house?
Shade the west wall. A 6 ft deep verandah or porch, 2 ft chajjas over windows, fewer and smaller west windows, a 9 inch or insulated west wall, and trees in the west setback all help. Bring daylight from north and east windows instead. These moves also match Vastu, which treats the west as the solid, heavy side of the house.
