QUICK ANSWER

South facing house vastu places the main door in the south-east half of the south wall, in the third or fourth pada counted from the south-east corner. The kitchen goes to the south-east, master bedroom to the south-west, pooja room to the north-east at the rear, and toilets to the north-west or west. A south facing house is fully workable in Vastu when the door is placed correctly; the fear around it is mostly a myth.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Door in the south-east half of the south wall, in the third or fourth pada. Never in the south-west corner.
  • The front is the heavy side here. Master bedroom and stair sit at the front right, living room at the back.
  • Pooja room and open space go to the rear left, the north-east, which is also the quietest part of the plot.
  • South sun is strong but high. A 2 to 3 ft chajja on the front keeps the wall shaded in summer.
  • South facing plots are often the cheapest in a colony. Correct planning removes the Vastu objection.

Where the door goes in a south facing house

The door goes on the south wall, in the half closer to the south-east corner. Count nine equal parts along the south wall starting from the south-east corner. The third and fourth parts are considered the correct positions for the main entrance in south facing house vastu. The second and fifth are acceptable with care. The parts near the south-west corner, six to nine, are avoided.

This is traditional Vastu guidance, not science, and we say so to every client. The reason the door position matters so much here is that a wrongly placed south door, in the south-west, is the one thing almost every Vastu practitioner agrees is a problem. Get the door right and the rest of a south facing plan is routine.

In our Indore studio we meet families who have walked away from good, well priced south facing plots out of fear. That fear is misplaced. The direction map for rooms is the same as for every other facing, only the entry wall changes. Our complete room by room vastu house plan guide sets out that map.

FROM THE STUDIO

Measure the real bearing on site. A plot sold as 'south facing' often faces south-east or south-west by 15 to 30 degrees, and a south-east leaning plot gives you more freedom with the door.

Room placement for a south facing plot

In Vastu the south and west are the heavy, closed sides. For a south facing house that means the road side carries the solid rooms, and the open, light rooms sit at the back towards the north. This is the reverse of what most people picture, so the table below spells it out.

The kitchen lands at the front left in the south-east, right beside the entrance. This is the one happy accident of south facing plot vastu: the kitchen is near the door, so groceries and deliveries are easy, and the cook faces east towards the plot's side wall.

The master bedroom takes the front right, the south-west. It is a thick walled, shaded room facing the road. Clients sometimes resist a bedroom at the front for privacy. A 5 ft setback with a planted screen and a high sill window solves it. For the inside of the room, see our guide to master bedroom vastu, bed direction and attached toilet.

The living room at the back, and why it works

The living room in a south facing house vastu plan sits in the north or north-east, which is the rear of the plot. Families worry that guests will walk through the house to reach it. In practice the entrance opens into a short foyer or the dining, and the living room is one step beyond. The walk is 10 to 12 ft, not a corridor.

The benefit is real. The rear living room opens onto the north side, which gets soft, even light all day with no glare and no heat. The front of the house, which takes the strong south sun, is occupied by the kitchen, stair and master bedroom, rooms with thick walls and small openings.

  • Rear living room with full height north glazing onto a small court or setback.
  • Pooja in the north-east corner of the living room, or a separate room beside it on larger plots.
  • Dining at the centre connecting the front kitchen and the rear living room.
  • Children's room and common toilet at the rear right, north-west, with the stair along the south or west.

Sun on a south facing house

South sun in India is strong but high in the sky for most of the year. That is easier to block than the low west sun. A horizontal chajja of 2 to 3 ft over every south window, or a continuous slab projection over the front wall, keeps the wall in shade from roughly 10 am to 3 pm in summer. In winter the lower sun slips under the chajja and warms the front rooms, which is welcome in central and north India.

We also keep the south wall 9 inches thick or use AAC blocks, and we limit the window size on the master bedroom's south face. The kitchen window on the south-east gets morning sun and a chajja, which is comfortable.

If your plot faces west instead, the sun problem is harder because the evening sun is low. Our post on the west facing house vastu plan and its shading fixes explains the difference.

Sample south facing house plans by plot size

20x40 south facing plot

Door in the south-east half, kitchen beside it at the front left corner, stair at the front right along the south-west, dining at the centre, living at the rear along the north, one bedroom at the north-west rear, common toilet at the west. Master bedroom upstairs at the south-west, pooja niche in the north-east corner of the living room.

30x40 south facing plot

A comfortable south facing 3 bhk plan on G+1. Ground floor: entrance south-east, kitchen south-east corner with a utility, parents' bedroom south-west at the front right, stair along the south between them, dining centre, living along the north, pooja north-east, common toilet north-west. First floor: master bedroom south-west, two bedrooms along the north with a family room between.

40x60 south facing plot

Room for a covered car porch at the south-east, which also shades the front door, a proper pooja room at the north-east, a lawn along the north, the master suite at the south-west and the stair along the south. See worked examples in our south facing house plans collection.

Toilets, stairs and the south-west corner

The south-west corner is the most protected heavy corner in Vastu, and in a south facing house it is the front right. It takes the master bedroom and often the stair beside it. It never takes the door, a toilet pit or the underground water tank.

Toilets go to the north-west or west, the rear right. The attached toilet of the south-west master bedroom sits on its west side, which conveniently lines up with the common toilet stack behind it. Our guide on toilet and bathroom position in a Vastu plan covers the attached toilet question in detail.

The staircase goes to the south or south-west, climbing clockwise, and in a south facing house that is the front, between the kitchen and the master bedroom. It should not sit at the centre of the plan or in the north-east. For the structural side of this, see how we position a staircase to suit Vastu and the structure.

Our urban planner also checks the bylaw setbacks before the stair and porch are fixed, because south facing plots on main roads sometimes carry a larger front setback and a parking requirement that changes where the stair can land.

Mistakes we see in south facing plans

  1. Door in the south-west corner because the client wanted the kitchen at the centre of the front. Shift the door east.
  2. Living room at the front for the road view, pushing the master bedroom to the rear north. This reverses the heavy and light sides.
  3. Kitchen moved to the north-east at the rear to be near the living room.
  4. Underground water tank in the south-west corner of the front setback. It belongs in the north-east.
  5. Toilet above the pooja on the first floor. Check every plan in section.

Facing does not change the build cost. In 2026, a G+1 south facing house of about 1,800 sq ft costs roughly Rs 1,700 to Rs 2,400 per sq ft in tier 2 cities and Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,200 in tier 1 cities, depending on finishes and city. South facing plots themselves are often 10 to 15 percent cheaper than north or east facing ones in the same colony, which is a real saving if you plan correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a south facing house bad as per Vastu?

No. A south facing house is considered acceptable in Vastu when the main door is in the south-east half of the south wall and the rooms follow the standard direction map. The fear comes from wrongly placed south-west doors, which almost all practitioners agree against. With the door in the third or fourth pada from the south-east corner, a south facing house is routine to plan.

Where should the main door be in a south facing house?

In the south-east half of the south wall. Divide the south wall into nine equal parts from the south-east corner; the third and fourth parts are considered the correct door positions, with the second and fifth acceptable with care. Never place the door near the south-west corner. The door should open inward and clockwise with nothing blocking it directly in front.

Where does the kitchen go in a south facing house?

In the south-east corner, which is the front left of a south facing house, right beside the entrance. The cook faces east at the hob. This is a convenient position because deliveries and groceries come straight in. If the south-east is unavailable, the north-west at the rear right is the accepted second choice. Never place the kitchen in the north-east.

Which room should be at the front of a south facing house?

The heavy rooms. In Vastu the south is the solid side, so the front right (south-west) takes the master bedroom and the staircase, and the front left (south-east) takes the kitchen and the entrance. The living room sits at the rear in the north or north-east, opening onto soft north light. A 10 to 12 ft foyer or dining connects the door to the living room.

How do I protect a south facing house from heat?

Use horizontal shading. A 2 to 3 ft chajja over every south window or a continuous projection over the front wall keeps it shaded from about 10 am to 3 pm in summer, while winter sun still reaches in. Keep the south wall 9 inches or use AAC blocks, limit window size on the south-west bedroom, and bring daylight from the north side where the living room sits.
